My three BT house phones have slowly given up one by one, so they will go in the bin along with the BT Home Hub 3.
I don't have a mobile anymore, so spotted this little beauty, IDECT Smart 64, 4" touch screen, runs Android 2.2, makes calls either normally through the phone line, and also via wi-fi over the net, in fact I think that is known as VOIP. I can also now make free mobile calls via an App, so dont have to pay 25p/min, in fact it does everything that a mobile does apart from having a sim card. It does have a 32GB Micro SD card though.

Tut,
When you call a landline with this, who pays for the call if it is not you? I know, for example, that Skype is free Skype-to-Skype, but if you want to call somebody on a landline you need credits.
Cheers,
Robin

I have a £5/month 24/hr land line option with Sky, but nothing for mobiles. Skype has an option for calls, but still too expensive for mobile calls especially internal UK ones.
After googling I found an app that let me call anywhere to land or mobile for free, but quality was not very good. I now use this one "Wi-Fi VoiP" which I took £3.50 credit for through PayPal having checked that it worked with free credit. Quality is excellent, the developer called me straight away to call him if I needed any help or had problems, and rates to a mobile or land line are £.006/min to USA & Canada where Ian is moving to, £.042/min to a Uk mobile, £.012 to Aussie and HK mobiles where most of Verians family live.
Not of much use to youse who have unlimited mobile contracts, but great for me as it also does everything that my iPad does but much handier to stick in your pocket. Away from the house of course I need a wi-fi connection to use it as a phone, but there are so many of those around now with free connection that it is still usable out of the house.

So what you're saying is, a mobile that's not mobile.
Now that that's neat.

So not quite free, then. That's all I was asking 'cos I didn't think anybody could offer it totally free to non-subscribers.
I agree it's the way of the future though - the concept has been knocking about for ages - once google's one number (or whatever it's called) comes to the UK I think I will get one.
P.S. Verian's

Can be free if you go the route of Pirate Bay or Isohunt.to, but quite happy to pay for the service that I am getting from somebody who developed an app that does what it says on the box.

Not sure why you would want one Robin if you have a mobile contract.
As far as I can see none of you use your landlines any more, my kids certainly don't, so if you get a signal in the house then they are pretty much redundant, except in the case such as mine.

Hi Tut,
The one number thing is handy way to aggregate disparate contracts, e.g. a French PAYG when in France vs expensive roaming charges.
Also not all contracts are unlimited calls, so if you make enough calls it can be worth having two phones and contracts.
Cheers,
Robin

Who pays the call charges in the iso cnut scenario?
If I call Bongo Bongo then surely BongoBongoTel, who provide the landline that will receive the call, will want their pound of flesh. Somebody must pay?
Cheers,
Robin

It is probably just their claims to get you to try something out, then it will turn out to be Malware or phishing for your bank details. As you say somebody has to pay somebody for it to work.
When I first called Ian who was in Aberdeen, it showed up as a Texas number, but the developer has changed it so that it now shows my home number. For my usage £3.50 will last for months and Verian can make a 20min call to Aussie for 24p.
