Announced in BTCC coverage this morning. Smitty raced touring cars for a while, as well as slinging an RS Turbo around for Late Late Breakfast Show.

Re: Mike Smith dies age 59
Yeah, was taken aback when I read that last night on net...complications from heart surgery if I recall correctly.....and wow..."only" 59...In the 50’s myself but hoping I'm in reasonable health, but you never know what's going on "inside"
Just away to phone my best mate from Thurso as 1 of his employees (coming up for 30 years service) collapsed at work with what turned out to be a cranial aneurism.....was airlifted to Edinburgh for surgery and seemed to be making a steady recovery in Aberdeen, even talking about returning to work in a few weeks.
Then had a massive stroke and is on a life support machine....not looking promising and under 50.
It would be great to live every day to its fullest but the routine of day to day gets in the way for most of us.........and on that note,f+ck the shopping I'm off out in the car to nowhere in particular, apologies for the sombre post.

Right attitude Jim, we are all going to die, make the most of it before you do.
If you can work it financially then retire before your due date and enjoy it whilst you are still middle and not old aged.

Robbed from SELOC
Pretty handy at the wheel too.
(The clip makes me yearn for the BTCC to use manual boxes again, and have realtime onboard commentary!)

Hope your pals employee improves Jim, doesn't sound good.
I'm nearing 50 and my attitude and perspective on the age thing is changing to what I expected.
I remember Mike Smith as a TV presenter when I was a kid thinking he was 'old', a few years later watched him in Touring Cars in the Sierra Cosworth / M3 era (drove both) realising he wasn't really that old, now he dies at what I call middle age, the same group I'm in, does make you think a bit.
On a lighter note, memories from Mike Smith was touring car days when he had a few scraps and incidents often with team mates but biggest was when him and Frank Sytner were team mates in M3's, Frank won a race, needing points for championship but didn't get the fastest lap point, he was annoyed on camera as he knew somebody not in contention for win must have pitted, put new tyres on and bagged fastest lap, commentator pointed out it was his team mate Mike and every word was bleeped for the next few mins, Frank then stormed off not a happy man.

Touring cars seemed to be "better" in the "good old days"!!...or was it that we relate to the cars more.If you have any free time search out some of the Aussie races from Bathurst, especially Tom Walkinsaw in the XJS on a flying lap or Gerry Marshall....proper characters!!
Not a good outcome with my mates' employee......life support switched off and funeral later this week.....43 years old,had worked with my best mate since he left school,27 years service...understandably,all in the workplace are stunned.

RIP
I remember listening to his chat on Radio 1 in the mornings on my way to school about his racing exploits over the weekend. Set me off dreaming about being a racing driver nicely at the start of school week.
