Windscreens....

Post by Simon82 » Fri Jul 25, 2014 1:24 pm

What's the general feel on getting windscreen replaced? got a crack in mine and would prefer it was done by Murray's but my insurance say It would be on my account to try and claim it back or I can take it to auto glass/ national windscreens to get it done and pay excess(I'm with CCi/Aviva)
What's peoples general take/ experience/opinions on this?

Hi Simon,

I recently had mine replaced. It's a clam off job, so really need to be done at Murrays (with the glass repairer going there). My insurance company were not willing to pay for the clam fitting and removal. After several phone calls, I spoke to Davie at Autoglass at Sighthill in Edinburgh, who took it on, and dealt with my insurance company for me. He was great, and the insurance company paid up - Murrays did the clam removal / fitting, and Davie went Murrays and replaced the windscreen. I'll see if I have his contact number for you.

Other option is to speak to Craig at Murrays directly, I know they have a windscreen guy that they use, but my insurer (Aviva) would only cover Autoglass as the fitter. :thumbsup

Edit, Phone David at autoglass; 0131 453 3506 - he'll sort you out :thumbsup

Brilliant Dom, thanks for that, will give him a shout :thumbsup

Edit. 5 minutes on the phone with them and sorted. :) why do insurance companies make things out to be so difficult!?

National Windscreen have taken 3 weeks to replace the one on my Exige that ive just bought.
Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'

Doesn't sound good, how come its taking so long? I actually spoke to them and they said they had a lotus in just now for windscreen and that they could do it no problem but they didn't fill me with confidence

I think they sent out an 18 year old boy to change it, not realising what was involved.
think they went to mmc 2 or 3 times & now they have taken the car to their own premises to change it.

National Windscreens had the wrong surround for it - that's what caused the delay.

Its a total pain in the ass to get done though. Murrays are the only people who will really take care to get the clam back on and looking perfect, as that's their part of the deal.

Would try and get it to MMC mate. Three attempts to fit the drivers side window on my old Elise.

Turned out they had chucked out some important trim when clearing out the broken glass. Only discovered this when they looked at the passenger door.

I guess the insurers and windscreen folks would have you believe ALL windscreens are simply commodity. But a few, like the Elise, simply are not!

I had mine changed about 5 yrs ago and SLS (when still trading) did the clam adjustments at the Auto Windscreens workshop. Impressive, actually.
