Car thoughts....968 Club Sport

Post by IanD » Wed Jul 23, 2014 5:35 pm

Anyone got any practical experience of Porsche 968 Club Sport as wondering the views on it vs Elise ?

Pondering some thoughts....

Maybe downgrading our main car so I would want to use the 2nd car (Elise) more but still not daily driver. Also the Elise isn't getting as much use as i would like as my wife finds it a bit impractical/too noisy/too cramped therefore we never do anything or go anywhere using it even at weekends unless i'm on my own.
I'm not really a track day person but sure i'll do some over time so really mostly road, weekend use. I know from reading car magazines for years, 968 CS is up with the best of the handling cars. Guy at work i know well has one and is thinking of selling, it isn't a perfect car, 6 owners 145K miles used but not abused

So questions based on anyone experience ?
• Is it a worthwhile and fun car for mostly road use including mundane stuff as well as weekend blasts
• does it cope with uk small rough roads suspension wise
• would you consider it any more practical than an Elise (not sure it is and probably a 968 sport model would be a better choice)
• is there any concerns / high costs associated with it to consider

Obviously I can research on internet and will speak more to guy at work about it, I've done neither yet. I've been asking to see it for ages anyway before there was any consideration of owning it. Must admit i do like the Elise and it is my 1st car where roof off is an option and i've liked that much more than i thought so not sure this is the best swap of having a roof and practical wise but having some thoughts anyway.

Cheers

Hi

I owned one .
A 1994 model in a dubious colour......but I loved it.
There are a few well documented problems to look out for ......check the 968 Owners club forum.....but ultimately if you know the provenance of the car via your colleague .....and your not being pumped price wise .....I would have a go

From memory here are a few areas to check on:-
cam chain/sprocket wear- this really needs a cover off inspection
gearbox pinion wear - gearbox has a heavy springy action as normal.....but check engagement in all gears
caliper plate lift - break callipers eventually need refurb...not deadly at around £100 per corner
belts........standard 944/968 check

Very practical
Plenty of Space
Reasonably quick.........with a big banger four cylinder sound
Suspension is compliant......but check the bushes as the car is getting on a bit
It's not an Elise.......and you will feel the extra weight
Well balanced car for track work........but I would get the sump baffled if you were intent on tracking it loads

Getting into the sought after bracket so potential for some reasonably depreciation free motoring
I sold my example in 96 with 14,000 miles for £22k.........and it's still floating around Cheshireshire with the same owner

:cheers

I love the handling.............and loads of classic 968's still racing are testament to that

I had one from 95-96 (makes me feel old) but can't really remember anything other than awkward gear change

I looked to get one a couple of years ago but went away thinking it looked and felt as if it had dated quite badly.

I haven't seen a fast one on track period. They are quite old and relatively slow now

Think their may have been some "buyers guide" in Evo magazine so I will have a look at the back catalogue for you to see if their is anything their.

Always fancied one myself but from memory the astute buy is a 968 Sport which does the majority of the Club but with a more day to day liveable feel. If you find the power lacking then I think you can supercharge them (saw one of those for sale a while back).

The Club Sport have kept their price but the front engined cars have never rocketed like the air cooled stuff.
