Help with BT

Post by Rag_It » Fri Apr 11, 2014 9:26 am

Well with less than 2 weeks until our new office move, Virgin has spectacularly f*cked up and declared themselves out of the running. Unable to install into our building.... (quite why they couldn't have told us 6 weeks ago when we ordered)

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has strings that can be pulled to help push this order through quickly as they reckon it could be a month before the installation might happen.... New office, no broadband = fail!

Cheers,

Dave

Sorry, no influence at BT but all is not lost......

If BT can allocate the new phone numbers then they can forward to a mobile#.
You can get routers that accept a 3G mobile dongle that would give you initial internet access.

That's a shame about Virgin, in my experience, their customer service runs rings round BT, for a start, they answer the phone, which is good.

BT are dead slow and stop, total nightmare to deal with, customer service rubbish, and just don't want to know, as you are just a problem to them, that's my thoughts anyway. We are the same, have no choice but to be with BT, so will have to put up with it for now. And there "Broadband", they offered us "1 meg broadband" Ehhh no.
we went back to 3 MiFi, works great, £15 a month, 12meg....

Not sure if it would be dependent on BT lines being in place, however, are there any independent phone service providers who could get things up and running faster?

My phone and broadband services are provided by Abica, and include a web based management site where I can manage my calls, and divert my number etc. Just a thought....

Thanks guys,

Virgin were exactly the reason we tried to avoid BT and their customer service. We're moving into some bright yellow shipping containers (a ScottishEnterprise funded idea!) in Dunders and apparently Scottish Enterprise have tied up some deal with BT so that no-one else can run lines into the building.

Being a web development company we're not too fussed about having a telephone, and i think we'd sort out some kind of VoIP system if our clients want to speak to us. Broadband however is a must! BT have however said they will try and make it happen for the 28th, but i am not holding my breath... Off down there today to see if we can pick up anyone elses router and jack that for a week or two!

As Dark said - we setup Draytek routers all the time to use 3G and 4G data dongles. Works well - if you have reception.

Other option is Huawei wifi device. It takes a 3G or 4G sim and lets up to 5 devices connect via Wifi.

Thanks to CubanGav who is going to check on progress!

Thanks for the advice on the routers if we're struggling....

Oh and no, the containers are more of a bright yellow. Not the prettiest things in the world from outside - inside they're very nice and for less then £500 a month, it will suit us down to the ground for the next wee while!

Plenty of options here. Must admit if there is a problem at work provisioning services for broadband I can pay an extra £100 for a fast track service and get things sorted out. Not sure if this would help but if you want to PM me some details I can try and help.

If getting the BT line into your “office”  is the issue then you are potentially looking at a firewall with 3G card installed or a dedicated satellite connection.

For anyone to give a solid recommendation they would need to visit site , test for 3G signal strength and get an idea of what services you would be running from your office. If you are just looking at uploading\downloading data to websites then no need to have a static IP address or decent firewall for port forwarding etc. Also a satellite connection would be much better for this as the connection speed is much faster although the latency (lag) on the connection can be hassle for web browsing.

If you need an IP phone or two let me know and I can bundle them in as part of deal.

PM me if you want any other info mate.
