Sadly September saw my old dad having to close down his garage business after 33 years. Not by choice, the council sold off the site for redevelopment. Spent all of my school & university holidays there and pretty much every weekend right up to the last day when we closed the gates. Happy days indeed, learned a lot over the years, will be sadly missed. A typical shot from the early days below and the last day when we emptied the place.

Know the feeling , my Dad had to close his place a few years back after forty odd years. Hope your dad got a good pay off.

No pay off, in fact after 33 years of paying rent the council even made him pay three extra days as he couldn't get the place emptied in time, thanks Stirling Council.

I can't believe that, paying rent and tax for 33 years and the council can just kick you out...
Really sorry to hear that Robin, hope you're well.

P.S Where will you restore/repair all your garage ornaments now?.

Hi Alan.
The site was offered for sale but the conditions of purchase were too much, ie. everything had to be demolished and re-developed to the councils spec', plus you had to gain points by employing more staff/trainees etc., so it wouldn't just be the financial bid that counted towards winning the overall bid. All of this was enough to put my dad off putting in an offer. We are looking around for another workshop but haven't seen anything suitable yet. I have space at home to work on the "ornaments" so should be ok although will definitely miss the convenience of the workshop. I'm more concerned about my dad though, 60+ years in the motor trade then all of a sudden just stopping can't be good, trying to get him interested in other activities is near impossible!.

I recently gave my dad a royal bollocking for stretching out from the top a ladder wedged against a tree, cutting branches....at the age of 76!
Seemed to do the trick which was odd as he was a strong-headed businessman most of his working days

I just called him from offshore to wish him a happy holiday and ended up on a 45minute oil industry round up
