Storm and lightning.

Post by tut » Fri Dec 06, 2013 3:05 pm

Twas really bad on Wednesday light and we lost power in the early hours, but not for too long so did not have to switch in the generator. However Broadband was off in the morning as we had no phone line, presumed the other locals would be the same so took no action. However it is still off, could not get a signal in the house for the mobiles, Verian's is normally fine, so round at the next door neighbour. Phoned BT faults to be told that I would charged £129 if it was anything internal, and that they would try and get an engineer out by next Wednesday.

Not even worth while arguing the toss, so not too proud to trot out the disabled line to get priority treatment. However they must be prepared for this as I had to spell out what the disabilities were to a very pleasant lassie in Mumbai who spoke excellent English. Turned out that Verian had to be disabled as well, so she now has senile dementia, but can not remember getting it.

They have now promised to have an emergency response team around within 24 hours, which is what the normal response should be. Will believe it when they are on the doorstep.

When I worked on Magnus (the most northerly platform in the UKCS), I awoken one night when I thought the standby boat had hit the legs.

The platform had a 27m airgap and a wave of this size crashed against the bottom deck.

Scary, but one of the reasons it's an interesting industry to work in.

Platforms and jack ups don't semi's do. they also pitch and roll sometimes quite a lot. Last rig I was on would roll/pitch anything up to about 7deg which doesn't sound like a lot but when you are onboard it is. Current rig is a drill ship and in heavy weather they move around more but has much greater inherent stability than a semi.

What a big wave look like on a semi. Not the one I was on but had many a night with similar if not worse.

BT just diverted an engineer that was working in Mintlaw a couple of hours ago, so the problems are now sorted. A circuit board had burnt out in the master socket, but as he had an Exige, you can imagine how much time we spent talking as opposed to him working.

Fortunately I tried the phone as he was leaving expecting a dial tone as the Broadband was working, but it was still dead. The master socket consists of three plates, so it turned out that the phone line side had burnt out as well, so he just fitted a complete new assembly which did the trick. Two hours in the end, but he had been here a couple of years ago and really liked the house, so was quite happy being in the warmth as opposed to up a pole.

Three days without the Internet and phone makes you realise how much you miss them when they are not there. Could not order logs, oil, coal, Xmas presents etc, as we had no mobile signal either, so had to go around next door with my laptop.

ps:- thanks for the offer Gav, would have been a bugger to miss that if they had not sent anybody until next Wednesday. One big surprise was him telling me that they are planning to put fibre into the Mintlaw exchange, and as we already have a green junction box in the village, they would just fit a new one alongside it, and even though it would then feed into our copper lines into the house, we would get 80mb.

:thumbsup

I'm trying to think who that was. None of the local guys ever had an Exige. Must be an interloper from another area :D

Got it wrong Gav, it was his friend who had the Exige.
