Fast or scary fast ..

Post by j2 lot » Thu Nov 14, 2013 2:11 pm

Interesting PH article, as cars become more capable and the limits get higher the thrills reduce.

Made me think about the Top Gear piece a couple of years ago that compared modern cars to period race and rally cars.

Yep. Even a few years ago when I had a Scooby, yes it was ace, yes it was wonderfully efficient at finding grip in the worst of conditions but for me the enjoyment comes in part by driving to a limit - which simply wasn't achievable in a way that wasn't going to result in a lost licence.

I fancy a GT86 for those reasons...

I can see the logic in that. Since bending my elise, as much as I loved it and hanker for another Lotus, I've been toying with the idea of a more 'classic' replacement. (OK for that read something still fun, but less money with less power, and hopefully less stuffable for someone of my limited skillz.) The fact I've been given a subscription to 'Practical Classics' doesn't help. Hey, I might not know one end of a spanner from another, but if these guys can rebuild a rust spot into a Dino in three pages, it can't be that hard, can it?
Funny how old cars seem like old girlfriends at 3am on a sunday morning: I'm now remembering my first with a rosy glow of nostalgia: a sh*tty spitfire made mostly of filler and Daily Record.
(That's the car; not my first girlfriend. Oh, hang on...) :blackeye

Lovely lovely cars but perhaps a tad lacking in crash protection for my liking... (Sorry)

Safety Devices full rollcage fitted for exactly this reason - not perfect, but a considerable help.

i came to this conclussion years ago when running a JDM twin scroll 320bhp impreza sti. it wasnt so much the acceleration but the really high grip limits. to get any fun out of it meant going way out of my comfort zone for road driving. other than the lotus the best driving memories(and also the worst!) i have were in my old DC2 integra type r. not much oomph by todays standards was great fun and mostly within my limits

doesnt stop me hankering after 'scary fast' cars though. :D
