Yep - but it's not used. Like, at all. I think it's just that a lot of the banter/drivel merchants (and I count myself as a major one of those) drifted to posting the drivel on Facebook for their direct mates - both from SE and elsewhere. It's an outlet for the general life drivel that did make up a large percentage of the SE posts - we have to remember Facebook has gone from a curiosity to a major form of international communication and a social revolution (for good or bad) in the space of only a few years.

Any reasoning to why that might be? Does the general level of 'mateyness' with the regular members come over cliquey, or exclusive? Genuinely interested of the views of someone who still feels, as you say, like a noob here.

Not entirely sure, certainly not that everyone is a bit matey, that is a good thing really. It is possibly to do with, as said, the banter/nonsense drying up a bit/migrating, giving the forum a more formal edge to it

I actually though the FB group had disappeared - the last post was years ago. There are a bunch of SE people who are 'fwends' ( Inbetweeners anyone...) but that is because of and not a part of SE

I'm fairly new on here although I have lurked around for a while and that pretty much hits the nail on the head I think.

I know a long standing Exige owner who briefly dipped his toe into posting on here and went along to one event but said it was like walking into a pub on a Saturday night and attempting to gatecrash a group of mates, in other words he felt like a complete spare part and nobody really took much notice of him. He lurks for technical help now but that's it.

Although I haven't been to a social event myself as I'm in Norwich most of the time now, I can see where he's coming from as that's how it comes over to me. Not cliquey as such but just a group who have been together a long time, know each other well, generally get on well so don't really pay much attention to the new kid on the block. That's not a criticism in any way and is probably quite a natural way for things to pan out but that's how I perceive it.

FB has subtly taken over lots of things. I got a new car recently and previously would have started a NLC thread to show it and take some No Lotus Content type banter for getting old and boring. Now, I hadn't thought to do that here probably because it was NLC and likely to be less interesting, even to the folk who feigned interest on FB :D

I've never found it like that at all. In fact there's been a few times people on this forum have introduced themselves to me when I had no idea who they were.
Could be down to the type of person though, I'm quite used to carving out a life in places where I don't know anyone due to travelling with work.

It is odd how different forums evolve differently. I like SE (with it's regional slant) and read new posts most days, but probably don't post as much as I used to. Partly because it is less trackday oriented than it used to be, and partly because I seem to to get a hostile response at times. Maybe that's just me being a bit too opinionated, or the way I put things, but it does dent the enthusiasm. On the other hand, I am more active on Facebook and other forums where interests tend to be more focused on the technical side, and personal opinions are often treated with more tolerance.

The challenge for SE is to attract new members with the energy, enthusiasm, and the personality to steer the forum into new territory. But that can be difficult for the established members who need to be willing to let it happen.

For my 2p i was a noob once and it seemed intimidating at first, but i basically started posting, then went up to KH and started introducing myself to people.

I've no idea what happened in the intervening years but i met the best man at my wedding through here, and there was an entire SE table at the wedding

I guess that means people must be friendly. Or i'm a stalker. Or a bit of both.

I must be missing something if S_E comes over as cliquey or exclusive in any way, nobody has ever joined on here and not received a warm welcome.

Nobody has ever asked for advice whether it was technical or otherwise without receiving it. We go out of our way to try and get first timers to come along to KH with or without their cars and come out as pax with us to see what it is all about and hopefully take their own cars on. The same with road runs or social events, everybody is welcome, but there are times when you have to introduce yourselves if we have not met you before.

Tut Towers was a great time to get as many of us as possible together, with 100 cars and 150 people at the six weekends over twelve years it was a good time to put faces to names, everybody was invited on here regardless of how long they had been a member, and there are many happy memories to look back on.

Nothing stays the same, tis called evolution, and things go through phases, but I believe we have reason to be proud of our Forum and the part it has had in our lives, mine more than most.

Dont feel insulted Tut i think its just a case that theres a large handfull of long term members that have a long time friendship which in a social scene may feel a little hard to jump right into the middle of especially if your on your own. Best to go on a run or a weekend away if your shy.

I've not been on here much since selling my Elise quite a few years ago, I did try to find the site for a while but it was not showing up on a google search so thought it was gone.

A post on pistonheads recently made me realise it was still here so I popped by, I've still got a hankering for another Elise and think this site is an excellent resource. I have some great memories of my one and only SE run before I sold the car and found most members to be very friendly when I can up to KH for a trackday any had a few pax lap which was awesome and made me feel part of something. Hopefully 2014 should see me return to the lotus brand an I can't wait to actively participate on the board again
