Twin charging

Post by r10crw » Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:53 am

Ive just taken my old CLK200 Komp off the road. Got it 8 months back for 700 and now needs around 500 spent for the MOT. As its a little rusty (and I hit a deer) I dont think its worth sorting so just gonna scrap it, but it has a little supercharger in it.

Now I know the likes of Ronin and I think Scuffers with Jamies car have got compund charge but think they are looking for peak performance and probably using m90's? If my 3076R was fed into an M45 from the merc and then through the chargecooler would it be any use? Ive got loads of space to fit it and it would be a nice little project. Just thought it might help boost the lower end of the power graph, almost smooth it, but would it be an issue at higher rpm? Restrictive or just a heat pump? Im only running 7K redline so not like the honda boys.

Can it be kept simple, such as have a standard bypass on the supercharger which is worked from vacumm (throttle closed) or would I need electronic control to bypass at high rpm, could emerald control this?

Easiest induction setup would be to go straight from turbo outlet to the charger then to chargecooler then to throttle body and finally inlet manifold. If this works then I can do all the fabrication myself and doesnt cost too much, guess only considering because its there,

Someone want to give me £300 for the merc and stop me thinking about this??

Currently running a built audi not a k...

I counted 2 and only understood them when I reached the end of the post and still wasn't that sure until a few readings if it was to tweak the dead Merc or the Exige.
All respect though :thumbsup

you need to have a clearer idea of what your trying to achieve?

ie, why are you looking to compound charge?

answers could be to get higher boost than individual SC/Turbo can provide or to reduce lag on a huge turbo etc...

if you could add in some engine spec's and targets it would help

I guess its mostly just to have a go. Im not looking for more top end power just more low down torque. Really like the turbo but it doesn't spool until higher in the rev range, around 4.5K. This means that you rely on the gears a little more, for instance when looking to pass its better to drop a couple gears at which point the car is starting to scream and you pass very quickly but would like it to be more leisurely by keeping 5th and using the lower end of the rev range. Does that make sense? Effectively give a feel of a much larger capacity engine rather than a 1.8 screaming to make 450 ponies.

Currently running a fully built 1.8T audi unit with tubular manifold mated to a GT3076R, this feeds through a Pro Alloy chargecooler and finally onto a big port Sharran manifold.

Power wise Im mostly running around 1.6 Bar, not extreme as the build could take over 2. I might go there eventually (If I dont sell her first) but for the time being I thought this would be a nice learning project which I could attempt for peanuts and if it doesnt work its no biggie as its just bolt on.

I have the exige rear clam so theres lots of space above the engine, would just need a basic frame to house the charger and some pipework. What Im not sure about is whether I would need to change the location of the TB, do I just need a standard supercharger bypass or electric? Is the M45 too small? From what I can see most are using the m62 LS9?

Just thought it might be a nice project over christmas. Some say I should cahnge for a GTX3076 as they spool earlier but from what Ive seen the benefits are marginal.

Stroking the engine to a 2.0 would probably be simpler for more torque and a lower spool, does kind of take the fun away though.

What about the GTX3071? It will flow more than enough and spools even earlier.
