Podcasts.

Post by pete » Tue May 21, 2013 7:23 pm

I spend a fair amount of time commuting and listen to quite a few podcasts - anyone got any suggestions?

I've been listening to cartalk - errm an American phone in show where Click and Clack (the Tappet brothers) take calls from Americans who have a car problem. Which they fail to diagnose over the phone. (A bit like Radio Scotland's "Off the Ball" but about car maintenance.). Look I'm not really selling this but it's been making me smile for a few weeks now.
Sample call "I have a 1987 Honda Civic and it pulls to the left and the wheel vibrates."
"Yeah, you need to get that fixed."

But funnier and more educational.

And the incomparable This American Life which is largely indescribable but some of the best radio I've ever heard.

I've just started listening to Cult of Mac (Apple podcasts) on my cycle to and from work and finding them hilarious and quite insightful!

I listen to the Bugle, it's a sarcastic look at the weeks news and events by three English guys, tried to listen to a few American shows before but didn't quite get the humour...

I also like the Rhod Gilbert bbc Wales weekly podcast, occasionally a bit tedious but usually funny.

Click and Clack are hilarious - I used to listen to them live on NPR on the weekend whenever I was in Boston.

If you can find the one about "Foreign Accent Syndrome" you'll love it, I am sure. in fact I couldn't resist listening to it, so here it is:

http://www.cartalk.com/player5/player-t ... 20Syndrome

I love the puzzler and the credits:

e.g. their lawyer: Hugh Louis Dewey of Dewey, Cheetham & Howe

or international lubrication experts: C.V. Boutros Boutros Gali and Fidel Castrol

The actual car chat somewhat irrelevant, but still amusing ... especially when they ask what colour the car is to stall for time ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah me too, and some of the BBC ones too. More or Less is very good. If you like maths and statistics...

I've been chuckling at "Stump the Chumps" ( for non-listeners it's the feature where previous callers ring back to let them know if their answer was right).
Some of their answers sound so plausible and so logical. And they are so seldom right :D

Their careers are quite interesting ... I'm sure they would be involved with SE if they lived here :-)

Cheers,

Although I do know they were in "Cars". (Millie's favourite film for a long time).

That's excellent - their holding company is also called Dewey, Cheatem and Howe. And they have it on their office building.

I have to admit when I first started listening to it (only a couple of months ago) I was reminded of you and our technical section.

It turns out I've been listening to re-runs as they retired last year. Not re-runs sorry, classic episodes, previously aired.

I can't recommend the No Agenda Show highly enough. A light hearted twice weakly disassembly of the media and governments around the wold. What's really going on and where is the money really going. Listener supported with no corporate ties so they can have a pop at anyone.

I too like John C Dvorak but his show is too much for me. I do enjoy it when he is on twit, this week in tech my normal commute podcast. This week in enterprise tech ought to be better though.

I used to listen to Twit but it got too much for me in the end. Couldn't stand Jason thingy either (although I understand he got dropped for nicking Leo's ideas).

No Agenda sounds right up my street, thanks for that.

And the DH Unplugged Podcast, a weekly look at the ups and downs of the stock market. It's very good.
