Stuck a new steering rack in the car last night and have managed to damage one if the column bolts as it came out. Need a quite specific bolt for the job; M8 fine x 40mm long in 10.9 grade with a 15mm fitted section. Has to be one of the few times my nut & bolt pile has let me down. :/
Car is booked in for a pre campaganaza geo first thing Thurs am.

Can you not just tidy it up with a die, then replace it with the correct bolt later - won't affect geo so long as you don't slip the spline ...
Cheers,
Robin

Sadly, no. It was really tight coming out, so I used the thread to jack it out. The thread is chewed completely and has a narrowed section. Found an 8.8 grade bolt of the correct length, but it has a large washer built in. Can cut the washer off if needs must.

Shame. I don't have such a bolt I'm pretty sure. I take it you've asked Craig at MMC - he might have one - perhaps too late to get on this weeks parts order, though?

Not something we stock at work I'm afraid. Lumsden Stuart, Engineering Supply or etc. should be able to get you one but you will probably have to buy a box.

There's a nut & bolt place in Blantyre (just down from the defunct car wash) - would offer to pick one up but I'm in Crewe.
Normally a minimum order so good time to stock up as you can split the items to make up the cover.

Give them a call if you don't see it listed, they can put things in the post for you.

I've had a check all round the shop floor and all have said we don't stock anything like that, it would probably something that would need to be made up. I can see what I can do but with you needing it so quickly might be a struggle. Have you got a wee drawing and picture of it and I can see if someone can knock one out on a machine for you?

Thanks for all your suggestions.

. I knew there would be someone on here who could help.
The slight panic is over for the time being; had forgotten for the purposes of these situations 8mm = 5/16ths within a few thou. Have something that looks the correct spec to try this evening.
