Love this thread - clearly I am not the only old git here :)

I have a slightly embarrasing one. Duran Duran, Edinburgh Playhouse 1981. They were actually really good :leave Also saw Kraftwerk about then and they genuinely changed my view of music forever.

My mum wouldn't let me go and see Yes in Frankfurt in '77 - I was really miffed.

I cannot remember which was first but in the very late 70s/early 80s I saw AC/DC, Motorhead, Ozzy (post Sabbath), Genesis (obviously post Peter Gabriel - would have loved to have seen him). Later on I also saw Simon & Garfunkel and the Stones in the same week, both at Wembley Stadium :-) Also saw Rush at Wembley Arena, I think .., though could be imagining that ... unmemorable anyway :-)

I've also seen Kraftwerk having been a fan from when we lived in Germany ... legends in their own synthesizers!

Never saw Zeppelin - I didn't even know about them until probably '78 - couldn't go to Knebworth (no funds) and the rest is history ... agree with Shug that if you could go back in time to one concert, they would be high up the list.

Public Enemy ... good stuff ... different era of course

Cheers,
Robin

Is that partly because the Caird is reputed to have the best acoustics of all venues in UK?

I was 15 when I went to my first gig, with school on a Sunday matinee...Duran Duran...before they got really big! I've been a fan every since lol.

It got better after that. I was very lucky as my best mate's dad was the editor of the Glasgow Herald so we got free tickets for everything. Name a big touring band from the late 70s and 80s and I've probably seen them including Kraftwerk Robin as I was a big fan too. They supported Gary Numan (who was dire) as did Tik and Tok (odd mime artists). I've seen AC/DC three or four times. Just tremendous especially the Cannon and Bell tour at the Glasgow Apollo with bits of the plaster roof coming down every time the cannon went off during For Those About to Rock. Hawkind was mental at the Barrowland Ballroom but mainly because of the support act - Dumpy's Rusty Nuts! The drummer broke his hand so they had to get a session drummer at the last minute who didn't know any of their stuff so they just did blues stuff all night. Dumpy hurled abuse at the audience all night as well.

I saw The Police who were terrific and U2 on the Under a Blood Red Sky tour again before they got really big as I think they'd only released War and Boy at the at point. Girlsschool were great too although mainly because the singer did all her clothes changes in silhouette behind a screen but none of them were lookers. I can't recall who they supported - Iron Maiden maybe. Huey Lewis and the News were good, they supported Talking Heads. One of the best nights was John Martyn but that was years' later. One of the blokes I went to uni with was a mature student and knew John so he got us tickets. Before the gig Murray asked if we'd like to meet him. Not believing Murray we said sure. Turns out John drank in a wee a rough pub sometimes before he played in Glasgow and sure enough there he was in the back room and said high Muzz to Murray when we walked in. He was pretty pissed but delivered a top notch set.

Anyway, and loads of others. I'd not been to a concert for years since then until I took Ashley to see Steely Dan at the Brum NIA 6 years ago (first date actually) and it was sh*t really. A load of ageing middle class folk feeling a bit awkward about whether to stand up and sing along or not. Not a great first date as she got up and went to the bar half way through leaving me to it. I can play Do It Again note perfect (on the hard setting on guitar hero (:)

I was too young for Led Zep but my cousin is five years older and did indeed go to Knebworth to see them. A fact he often reminds of. He also saw The Sex Pistols and AC/DC when Bon Scott was the singer. He reckons he was in the audience when they recorded The Jack in the Glasgow Apollo (Any Virgins in Glasgow?) . Little known fact but Bon Scott was born in Forfar.
