Question for the network gurus, NLC

Post by r10crw » Tue Apr 30, 2013 7:44 pm

Hi, Im not sure what I want to do is possible and have limited information on the products so may not be an easy answer but here goes :D

I basically have a robot which is sealed and does what I tell it by programming it over a network. I can go in wirelessly but it has to go through a standard wireless router.

Basically the machine speaks to the router and I speak to the router via the laptop. I want to remove the router and speak to the vehicle directly.

So I have a program on my PC called Connectify which turns my internet connection into a hotspot. It can even take a wireless network connection and rebroadcast over the same network. Ive used it when in hotels to share my internet with several device and works great.

I tried using this but because Im not sharing internet it doesnt seem to be too happy. This is actually only one of the reasons but dont understand the others well enough to explain!!
The Machine knows to look for a router with SSID of "Ronda_123" and has the password for WEP (I think) which is 64 bit and has 10 digits. I cannot change how the vehicle is configured.

The laptop is standard Win 7 so have full access, any ideas if this is even possible?

Thanks for any advice or opinions or recomendations etc etc...

Craig.

Have you tried using the standard Windows 7 ad-hoc wireless settings mate?

First off, I am assuming it is impossible to reconfigure the robot to work in ad-hoc mode rather than infrastructure mode?

If it can do ad-hoc, then this is the route to take.

If it cannot do ad-hoc then you need a software wireless base station, and you need one that is designed to be more general purpose than the "MyFi" type of thing, which, as you suggest, are all about sharing internet connection between multiple devices but don't provide point-to-point connectivity within the "virtual router". I have a feeling that Win7 has this built in, but I cannot find the configuration information for it right now ... will look.

If you could tolerate a little extra hardware then a 3G MyFi router could work for you. They support one PC attach via USB and usually up to 4 WiFi devices; you can configure security and who can access and they do, typically, provide device->device connectivity; you can leave in offline mode all the time so no attempt to access 3G (no signal required). The device is USB & battery powered so will work so long as your laptop has power left.

Cheers,
Robin

WIFI host mode, surprisingly supported for some network adapters in W7 . . . http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/ar ... dows-7.htm

Thanks Gents, Ill have a read of that wifi planet today.
As robin suggests I can get into the config inside the vehicle to configure it. All it does is if it sees a "ronda_123" it connects using the WEP key it has.

Oh and its a AUV, so basically an unmanned submarine. Trouble is the vehicle is tightly controlled as its primarily a mine hunter so Im not allowed to do anything inside. Means all I can do is work around it by streamlining the external hardware.
