This article in the Guardian is probably the most balanced, accurate and articulate view I have read on the subject.

Thatcher was very divisive, and continues to be, as demonstrated by the contributions to this thread. For that, I haven't missed her since she ceased to be PM in 1990.

Her recent demise means very little to me... other than that it's been a chance to reassess that period as an adult with some life experience, as I was a mere teenager when she exited. Can't say that the benefit of hindsight has made me feel much more positive about the lasting effects she's had on our country or our culture... clearly other opinions are available!

Also don't agree that "being a strong leader" in itself justifies an individual's political career, for reasons that should be obvious to any 20th century historian ;)

And everyone knew where the Torch was.

At the time, I didnt know why that was.
The power cuts were fun, but then we had a generator in the garage cos we stayed in the ferry and my dad ran a plant hire company :P

If that was in Sheffield you may still have my half brick.

Which reminds me - If there was one redeeming aspect of Thatcher's divisive reign, it's that it generated a LOT of good satire (Spitting Image, etc.)! :cheers
