iphone 3gs screen help....

Post by Stu160 » Fri Jan 06, 2012 1:52 am

Hi All

My lovely daughter had just dropped her iphone. Not bad, she has only had it 6 weeks

Anyway, where is the best place to get a new screen, are the ones on Ebay ok??

I am sure I can change it myself, after watching the youtube vids, just need to get the right parts.

Cheers

Not sure about getting it fixed Stu but for future protection against possible damage I can thoroughly recommend Zagg Invisible Shield iPhone protection. Skye has it on her HTC Wildfire and the screen is still in one piece  Its got a lifetime guarantee so if the protection film gets damaged then you get a free replacement from their Eire depot. You have to return the old protection film within 60 days. It is very strong stuff and still works fine for using the phone.

I repaired a 3GS with a broken screen last year - It's a bit fiddly, but so long as you're methodical while taking it apart / putting it back together, you be fine...Just be careful when popping the screen off, not to snap the ribbon connector at the top.

EDIT: If it's a recent 3GS, check you have the correct precision screwdriver to undo the screws at the base - Apple changed from cross head, to star shaped 'security' screws to stop you getting into to it last year; although you can probably pick up the tool from eBay now.

(Got my replacement screen / digitizer from eBay too - worked fine... :thumbsup )

I had a iphone repaired not long ago. Dont know if you are close to Edinburgh? The repair centre is in the Grass Market, and they did it straight away. :D

Luke broke both screens on his Wildfire, the outer touch one and the LCD one underneath. I looked up the video on utube then ordered the two screens as a package on eBay for around £20.

Followed the instructions exactly taking my time, and it was as good as new. What is it with these kids, you offer to put a protective clear film on that can not be seen, but it is not cool. What is not cool is not taking out accident insurance on a £450 phone.

Skye had picked at the edge of the Zagg Invisibleshield protector I fitted on her Wildfire and eventually it got tatty so I ordered a free replacement. By the time it came she had peeled off the protector and thrown it away  Was so lucky that AMP3 had a full cover HTC Zagg Invisibleshield full body pack in their £1 bargain bin. Its not for a Wildfire but will use it as a return so that I don't get charged full price for the warranty replacement. I will then use the extra unused bit from the full body kit to fit my new iPod Nano Result all round :thumbsup

So I can see a wee Zagg invisible shield fitting session coming up. The tip seems to be to use a good bit of the spray they supply. I have the full body kit on my iPhone and its great. The protection is amazing, and hopefully will prevent any breakages. Good to know that screens can be replaced though :thumbsup

I have had the iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS and 4G in bits to replace various parts for various people. Changing the 3GS screen is fairly straight forward as you disassemble the 3G/S from front to back (4G/S however is much more complicated as you work from the back to the front).

I get a lot of my parts from http://www.parts4ipods.com/

They have all parts required to do pretty much anything on any handheld apple device.

Hope that helps and if you need any advice feel free to ask.

If you do want to get one for cheaper from Ebay, to make life easier for yourself get one with a frame, something like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iPhone-3GS-Di ... 336aa1ead7

Much easier.

EDIT: That one is just as an example, there may be cheaper ones on ebay available
