I like it so that family and friends from far and near can see what we are all up to. I use my iPhone for facebook and SE and this so much easier than using a pc or laptop. Thumbs up from me but I am only 40 so still down with the young uns and all dat
I have however removed overposting boring fockers as friends but have also made contact from American school friends from about 28 years ago!!

Theres two ends of linked in for me.
Main reason i joined it was to keep up with people I've worked with in the past
My industry is so small that I often work with Same people Again and again through different projects etc.

The other is the recruitment consultants. This seems to be their new tool of choice to harass the fcuk out of you!

Viz's twitter feed is quite amusing sometimes but that's my warped sense of humour.

I joined FB a few years ago and hated it... then after about 6 months, I went back to it as I was missing a lot of what my pals were up to. Now, I find it quite useful. If you know how to get the best out of it, it makes life with it easier. All the folk who post up "sitting having a nice cuppa" nonsense are a PITA, however, you can remain friends with them, but hide their posts (or just delete them as a friend). Having done that, it is better to use. Not really a big fan of it, but use it as everyone else does.

Tried Twitter; lasted about a day - what a load of tosh.

On linkedin and have been for years - to date to total waste of time. I have however picked up a few clients through FB.

Keith, you can go into you settings and switch off email notifications.

I have found the settings to stop e-mail notifications when friends of friends have made a cup of tea, or had a good poo - still working on the rest

I joined facebook back in 2005 when it was only American colleges and universities that could use it as you had to have a email with a university name suffix, it was a great way of organising house parties (with kegs and red cups)

now I rarely post on it just occasionally glance in and sift through the pish.

It's brilliant. Fantastic means of communication at great ease. Brilliant way to organise events or parties and you can link it through your phone as well and sync it with your contacts. Also a very good way of advertising anything and everything as almost every site may now be linked to your Facebook page.
You will get garbage posted, I post it myself. One of very few drawbacks however you only see what your friends post so just make sure you choose them wisely and don't have differing views or posting habits then you won't have any problems. If there are problems then remove them. Easy.

Facebook was ok in the begining. But now it's plagued by all the apps. I think I stopped looking at it regularly when MafiaWars took hold, I coudln't give sh*t that you've got so many points, or acheived certain trophies etc. Alerts like that should be restricted to people using the app, not spamming everyone. Foursquare is doing the same thing for twitter. I'm with Ross on Linked-In, good for keeping contact with colleagues, and maybe some proffesional groups.

The thing is, none of these things are substitues for maintaining email or phone contact with people. The one thing that annoys me most is when you don't know some of your pals recent developments, specifically big stuff, but the reason is that it was posted on facebook coupled with an assumption you read all the posts.

I know people get a lot out of it and thats great. I also try and connect with friends on it so that if I do want to get hold of somone for whom I don't have any other means of communication, then I can. Ultimately the reason this type of social network thing started. All the rest of the features can do one.

So in summary, I don't like what it's become. But you have to in it so poeple who do use it exclusively could contact you if they wanted......ie neccessary evil.

Just for those who do not know, if you get mafia wars etc posting on your page just block the App before deleting and you never get a post from it again. The block option comes up when you click the cross at the top right of the post on your wall.
