Thankfully I have only ever had 3 points at a time on my licence, and have found that my (minor) speeding offences have had little effect on insurance costs.

Re: N.I.P today.
I'm fairly sure my NIP from Falkirk's finest had a helpful wee checkbox to ask for the photo evidence to be provided. I'm not sure what the significance is of taking up that offer versus writing a polite letter, but I know this advice comes from a knowledgeable source so, it's worth following I'm sureikarl wrote:
ETA - if you want/require pics - do not ask for evidence! just a polite letter asking for a picture (if available) to help identify the driver
An emotive subject this, obviously, in the same way as those on a road cycling forum would have a real spar with each other about running red lights (don't get me started...).
Sadly it does seem even easier to "get nicked" for speeding nowadays, with all the automated non-discretionary methods available. No matter that cars are far safer places to be than even 10 yrs ago - pedestrians have not advanced in their safety protection systems at all of course! (although some of them have probably got a bit fatter, if NHS stats are to be believed, which might help a little...*)
Whether the breaking of our favourite law is by lapse of concentration or conscious contravention, it doesn't really matter does it. A lesson needs taught, to try to remind us not to do it again, so in the same way that E and J are sent to the Naughty Step in our house, we just have to take the punishment and "have a good think about it", as I usually say to them

Re: N.I.P today.
It was not stated whether it was by radar gun, Gatso, or scamvan.
The latter is the only one that you can ask for the three pictures to be sent to you, speed, number plate, driver/pax view.

Re: N.I.P today.
sticking to the question of the NIP, pay it.
wandering into the land of the "speeding" - its the thing we most get done for and is the thing i hate most on the roads.
to me, the *motorways* were safer when everyone drove at an indicated 85mph.
can see loonies driving silly close to folk etc - but no electronic device has been devised and deployed to target that.
no no, just simple "how fast are you going" technology - stupid.
if the desire was to sort other mass-problems on the roads then i am sure that we would have seen these other devices.
just shows the motive behind it all - e a s y m o n e y.
i witnessed someone come off a roundabout and hit the car 2 infront of me head on.
i still replay it in my head - a flash of the rear of the two cars leaving the ground, and the long beeeeeeeep of the horn from the innocent driver, the smoke/steam pouring from her engine bay as she sat dazed in her car.
what happened to the other driver? zilch.
yet obviously he had done a huge mistake, distracted by his kids/phone/mcdonalds - and one of his passengers went mental at the innocent driver.
i am no respect for speeding fines when that exists and does not get addressed.

with regards the distance thing... remember the > > > > markings on the M6 in england?
saying u need to sit two > > away from the car in front?
if that was enforced then wet weather motorway driving would be alot less dangerous, and general motorway driving would be alot more relaxed.
surely dropping the scameras speed sensing and introducing the distance sensing would make more sense RE safety?

I was also surprised to hear a mod say that he thought it was ok to lie to try to keep points off a licence...ie encouraging someone to attempt to pervert the course of justice.
If you want to confess fire away, I think you know that isn't what I was suggesting.
Out of curiosity what is acceptable? Does the same apply to drink driving etc?

I don't recall any whining....just a simple request for opinions and advice.

Re: N.I.P today.
Ignoring it completely you might get lucky. I know people that have on more than one occasion done this and in the end received letters saying they weren't going to proceed any further.
Have no idea how they work this out, it could just be total luck?
If you are the kind of person that would be kept awake by worrying what might happen. Pay it.
A friend of mine recently got caught down south and was sent a letter with a fine but the opportunity of either 3 points or to go down south for a training day instead of the points! Have never heard of that before, but he was more than happy to do so since he already has points.

just a quick point to the OP - if you already have 9 or more points on your licence you could always risk going unsigned - pm me if you are

You can sometimes opt for a Training Day in England if it is a three pointer, but not in Scotland.

Re: N.I.P today.
I suspect I may receive my first letter in over 20 years of driving in the next few days
I was heading south on the A9 on Tuesday on one of the straights just before Gleneagles. It was pretty windy and I was momentarily distracted by the flags at the side of the road. Looked round to see a scam van in the distance. I was quite a bit away but I think they're pretty good even at a distance. I could be lucky but I doubt it.
So for me it's a case of get on with it if it comes through. I think I've had my fair share of luck with this over the years.
I don't agree with scam vans in the slightest though as I believe that they are there to raise revenue and don't contribute to fixing 'the problem'. If the government seriously wants to stop speeding either go for massive fines or car crushing or penalties of that nature... but that's a whole other debate in itself.

Re: N.I.P today.
Couldn't agree more. The 2 locations I regularly pass scam vans are on roads I drive at least once or twice a day. The are roads where everyone drives quicker than 30mph (1 is actually a dual carriageway) and in 9 years of living in the area, I have only seen or heard of 2 accidents. The scam vans make cars bunch up, and on a number of occasions I've felt I had to slow right down (like 15mph) because the following driver was so close it felt unsafe.hendeg wrote:I don't agree with scam vans in the slightest though as I believe that they are there to raise revenue and don't contribute to fixing 'the problem'.
