What's your favourite Scottish road?
Re: What's your favourite Scottish road?
Where to start. Too many to list. Can't choose between them. Most of my faves listed above. Also A701 Leadburn to Moffat and back again. B709 Innerleithen to Langholm pretty cool too.
Good point Dom, all surfaces f*cked somewhere or other on good routes, even the m-ways are currently a slalom. Going to take years to sort it all out

Re: What's your favourite Scottish road?
Yep the A890 is just epic, and the A832 too - in fact most of Wester Ross. Best bit of the A832 (in my opinion...) is the first bit from Achnahseen to Kinlochewe - resurfaced with EU money (supposedly 80 million Euros for West Ross Road Improvements to improve access) - it's one piece of tarmac for over 40 miles.....wianw wrote:Many favourites for different reasons, top 3 would be :
A890 - Achnasheen to Strathcarron - especially the first 10 miles long sweeping bends, stunning views little traffic
A832 - especially along the shores of Loch Maree
B9704?? - The Struie Hill from Alness to Ardgay - Often done this early in the morning heading for the Orkney Ferry, good mix of twisty and fast
Now, I need to plan a route to thread all this together.......

Re: What's your favourite Scottish road?
Thanks everyone.
Never heard about The Duke's Pass though.
Going to try and do do a monster weekend once we get some sunshine.
Aberdeen to Perth taking it nice and easy to get everything warmed up.
Perth through to Mallaig via Crieff, Tyndrum, Glencoe and Fort William.
Ferry across to Skye, and head to Ullapool via Kyle of Lochalsh, Shieldaig Kinlochewe and Poolewe.
Ullapool to Aberdeen via Inverness, Aviemore and Tomintoul.

You can cut the corner off and skip Perth (while having more fun). Come down through Glenshee, then when you get to Blairgowrie, head over to Stanley/Luncarty and cross the A9 there, then on over to Crieff.

Great route otherwise. Very similar to my first SE run (apart from the Skye bit - we stuck to the mainland). I think I slept for a week after that day out...

Indeed. Or cut off even earlier, at Bridge of Cally, and cross Strathardle to Pitlochry, then south briefly to Ballinluig, east to Aberfeldy then enjoy the full length of the moors and Sma Glen to Crieff

I can empathise – so many roads in Stirlingshire have become (IMO) unusable over the last two winters.Dominic wrote:Can anyone suggest a road that has an intact surface? All my favorite local routes have suffered this winter.
Get yourself down to the Borders – bit of a trek, but there are some great roads around Peebles, Selkirk and Galashiels. As mentioned above, the St Mary's Loch road is a bit of a classic (although last time I checked the surface was deteriorating south of the southern end of the loch so I U-turned at that point drove the good bit again).

Have you guys travelled them since the winter? How are the surfaces?
Cheers.
Re: What's your favourite Scottish road?
Dukes Pass has had a large section re-surfaced. Now largely great again .... just watch out for a couple of large pot holes in a 50m stretch on the north end, by the loch.
Re: What's your favourite Scottish road?
A68 was spectacular this morning at 0630. Had an unexpected meeting in Newcastle for 9 and thought I would take the 340 for a change as dressed down and no risk of ripping the suit, again. Arrived particularly refreshed with the brain warmed up listening to The Defamation Of Strickland Banks and then wound up with Disc-Overy.

Re: What's your favourite Scottish road?
Road to Muirkirk en route to Kames was always deserted and fun. However, the surface was buggered when I lived in Scotland so God knows what it's like now. I used to blow away the cobwebs doing this route then east onto the A70 and back through Lanark then down the Clyde Valley.
My fav is the Loch Rannochring for a variety of reasons. We did a run up there once although it was too busy to be fun. As I recall tut got tugged by the rozzers. I've camped by the Loch a few times and got up as the sun was coming up to do a couple of empty 'laps' . The road out to Rannoch station is a blast as well albeit short.
There are no good roads down here. You get the odd nice bit for a few miles and that's it. Not a chance of doing two hours without seeing another soul.

90% of that stretch had been recently resurfaced with lovely smooth tarmac... really good fun stretch of road.Kelvin wrote:Road to Muirkirk en route to Kames was always deserted and fun.
