Anyone put there car on a train?

Post by douglasgdmw » Wed Jan 05, 2011 11:03 am

My wife & I are thinking of doing a continental trip this year to watch a Formula 1 or Moto GP race and take the car across.

I would love to do the Mugello MotoGP to see Rossi riding a Ducati in his home country of Italy, however its a lot of distance to travel. I think we could cut a whole load of mileage by putting the car on a train to travel Germany/France in a day.

However wondering whether anyone has done this?

Cheers
George

Ps I know I am being a wimp by not driving it but it adds an extra 2000 miles to the journey

We looked into Autorail to the south of France but it was £500 from memory so that got canned.
We were planning on touring back up through France.

EDIT: It's Motor rail not autorail

My thoughts were to bypass the German motorways. I know they are Autobahn but even with no speed limits it is just a motorway.

Idea was to depart as close to the alps as possible so that we can enjoy the great roads down to Firenze. Can't afford to take the scenic route through Germany as it adds considerable time to the journey.

I have used the Berlin to Munich Autozug (car on a train thing) and there were no problems with the car, it just took a long time over quite a sleepless night. They also run a service starting in Dusseldorf which can take you to the south of France, the Austrian, Swiss, Italian alps and Munich. This link should work http://www.dbautozug.de/site/dbautozug/en/start.html
However the Autobahns can be quite good fun.

Sleep (well, and better than on a train) on the overnight ferry and be in Austria/Northern Italy the same day you drive off the ferry. It's a driving holiday... a day's autobahn 'cruise' is part of that adventure :thumbsup

If we can do it in a Caterham, I'm sure you can in an Evora

Its a definite for Mugello Moto GP as the accomodation has been booked :D

If anyone's want info on possible accomodation for Mugello, give me a shout as I have some places come back with availability (but decided to stay at a place we went to before in the Tuscan hills).

Plan is now to drive down to Italy in the Evora: taking in Ring, Stuggart (Porsche factory), Stevlio Pass, (maybe Monoco). To cut down the trip we will probably be taking the motor train up to Dusseldorf (so McKean I have slightly "manned up" ).

Just booked the Pagani tour of the factory as well :thumbsup

Cheers

Just need to figure out where all the Lotus garages are in case a new set of tyres is required.

Ps - Exige hire for 2 weeks with Hertz was £3k though !!
