Recommend me a route to Skye please.
Recommend me a route to Skye please.
Hi everyone.
As a new owner of a Lotus Elise I thought it would be a good bonding experience to go on a little road trip and enjoy some Scottish highland roads! Im heading up to Isle of Skye in a week or so, leaving from Aberdeen. Ive done the drive before but I was just wondering if you all had some tips for good driving roads to make the journey a little bit more exciting? Was planning on Aberdeen - Banchory - Braemar(?) and then where ever.
Any advice appreciated .
Mike

A real good Elise run would be to come down through Braemar, Glenshee, Blairgowrie, Dunkeld, Aberfeldy, Ballachulish, Ft Bill, Mallaig, then get the short ferry over to Skye.

That route has some awesome roads on it. Glenshee is heaven, Blairgowrie to Dunkeld is a great road, Glencoe is good if you miss the traffic, and the road on Skye when you get off the ferry at the south tip is amazing.
Google maps says 6+ hours to Mallaig, but ignore that, it's easily doable.
If you have less time (or energy), I would say head over the Lecht to Grantown, then up the A9 to Tore (boring bit) then over to Kinlochewe and then down to Kyle from there. Even shorter would be to turn off at Achnasheen and cut the corner down Loch Carron. However, there is a fair bit of boring stuff to do on that route before you get to the stunning roads beyond Garve.

As an alternative to Blairgowrie/Dunkeld on this route you could go Glenshee, Kirkmichael, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy.

Watch out on the A9, always one or more scam vans on there. If you see one you are too late.

The A86 down the banks of Lock Laggan is available if you decide to take the north side of the Cairngorms, it was resurfaced about two years ago and is like cadwell. Has pretty good views too
I believe its one of the best roads in scotland and you should get it done at least one of the ways.

I agree with Craig, head over to Grantown either via Ballater or Alford, down the old A9 to Newtonmore then A86 to Spean Bridge the A82 to Fort Bill. Or go one way and return the other, best of both worlds.

Hm.
Haven't driven the A86 in years, and certainly not since it earned "most dangerous road in Britain" status!
Must give it a try soon.

You don't have to drive on the A9, there are some great back roads from Grantown to NewtonmoreMikie711 wrote:I agree with Craig, head over to Grantown either via Ballater or Alford, down the old A9 to Newtonmore then A86 to Spean Bridge the A82 to Fort Bill.
