RS4 Update

Post by Northernpar » Sun May 03, 2009 5:35 pm

Been a while since I posted after the defection so having had the car a couple of months now thought I'd give an update on what life is like with the RS4.

So far the car is still living up to expectations with respect to performance. Remarkably agile in the twistys and blistering acceleration in-gear. Official figures quote 4.8s for 0-60 times but empirical testing indicates that this is more likley to be in the 4.2-4.4s range. What I can never get bored of is the torque, pretty flat curve through the range which feels like the car just keeps accelerating and never lets up. As I've said before doesn't 'feel' as fast as the Exige but this is probably more to do with the handling/suspension than the actual performance. So far fuel consumption is in the high teens/low twenties although I haven't really given it any 'spirited' driving yet but that would certainly take it down to the very low teens. Build quality as you would expect from a German manufacturer, excellent, and with the DRC hydraulic suspension the ride is firm without being crashy and exceptional handling through the bends for such a big lump.

Now for the downsides:

1. The Audi forums are nowhere near as good as this one with not as many technical experts around. I guess this is probably due to the car/technology employed whereas Lotus has a more DIY feel which encourages experience and technical learning. Too many people fixated on trying to determine whether or not their car puts out the 414bhp as quoted. All I know is that when I put the foot down very few other cars can keep up.

2.The DRC system has some issues which cause the dampers to leak oil, very expensive to fix however Audi has stuck a 5 year/60,000 miles waranty on them plus I hear that there may be a final engineering fix which will be free to all those affected.

3. The engine has known design issue both with airflow (difficult to get enough through the engine) and with the FSI technology which causes carboning up of the air intake side of the valves. There seems to be an ongoing debate with Audi on this as apparently it affects all FSI engines and what affects this will have on overall performance. Some guys have had the intakes off and polished and claimed a noticeable difference. I guess I'll keep an eye on this one to see where it goes.

So, in summary even with the known issues regarding the engine and suspension and the lack of 'tuneability' to get even more performance out of the block the car continues to bring a smile to my face when I drive it. So so far, so good although I hear that there is a new RS5 on the cards with either twin-turbos or a supercharger on it's way from Audi...............

Finally Audi stealers are just as bad, if not worse, than other dealers however persistance does pay off as a new set of front discs/pads (circa £1k through the dealer) plus a few days of running around in the stealer MD's car will testify. Just got to get them to agree to powdercoat the wheels now but that's a different story!

Aberdeen audi are a bunch of arseholes, my RS6 went in to diagnose an oil leak- someone did 25+ miles and 1/4 tank of fuel diagnosing said leak

The DRC is a bag of shyte as well, I binned mine and chucked on a set of H&R coilovers- have heard the rumours about the fix but its not a proper fix by any stretch of the imagination..

The forums are indeed full of polishers though :)

Funny how you say the 4's torquey, i found it peaky and not getting its lungs till 5k+, maybe i am spoiled by 415 ft/lb from about 1500 rpm :P

I've been reading up on these for what seems like an eternity now.

I noticed the prices taking a battering towards the end of 08 start of 09 but they seem to be holding firm now if not creeping up slightly.

I just need to convince my other half to sell her mini and take my current Kraut mobile to allow me to buy :D

Any pictures ?

I'm considering the H&R coilovers once the warranty expires, plus a Milltek non-res exhaust. There's also some work getting done at moment at MRC Tuning in Banbury to provide a solution to the carboning up of the intake/valves so will be keeping an eye on that one. All of the above plus a custom remap to remove the throttle restrictions in 1st through 3rd (limited to 60%) should improve the performance/response further.

The RS4 does have the 5k rpm power surge but I've found that it pulls consistently in every gear although I would agree that 1st and 2nd are peaky but 3rd and above are awesome.

Plus Got a call from Aberdeen Audi today agreeing to strip and powder coat the alloys so that's the final result :thumbsup once done and I'll probably only take it back there for the next service to keep the warranty in tact and any warranty work.

That seems to be the case. Seen the same spec/year/mileage car as mine now advertising for £1-2k more than I paid a couple of months ago. Will be interesting to see what happens to the prices when the RS5 hits the streets. Still a lot of speculation about whether or not its the same 4.2 NA V8 with improved airflow or if they have fitted twin turbo or superchargers. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

No piccies yet but once the wheels have been powder coated I plan to give it a good detail and will post some from then.

Good to hear a wee update mate :)

I'm surprised you've had to visit the dealers at all .. I've done 5k in my RS6 since January and all mine's been in for was a complimentary timing belt change :)

On the DRC front, mine is holding up well to abuse. The ride is a bit crashy over pot-holed cobbles but perhaps no surprise given it'll be designed to keep the car flat at 100 tuts plus.

I use RS246.com, and the C5 RS6 forum is pretty handy for all sorts of techy stuff. Not a huge fan of modding myself, been there, blown that up with the Elise. I think the power output is just fine for me anyway (as is the sound when I floor the loud pedal).

I'd be interested in the bum-dyno difference between the in gear alleleration of the RS4 n/a V8 and the RS6 bi-turbo - there's only so much the figures tell you :)

TBH the issues with the car were there when the car was sourced by Audi Aberdeen. It was a simple cased of the used car sales manager trying to do things on the cheap which p!ssed me off. A brief e-mail exchange with the MD of the dealership and all issues were addressed in pretty quick time, just the powdercoat of the wheels to be done and all will be well.

Been using RS246.com and the B7 forum and whilst there's a few knowledgeable folks on there many just seem infatuated with whether or not the engine can produce the stated 414BHP. Me, I'm going to wait until MRC or Audi get to the bottom of the intake coking and then get it all looked at in one go.
