Crap idea, I still dig out old threads and reply to keep information current and in one thread rather than start multitudinous threads on the same subject.

And how would we bump the special talent thread if it was archived?

There is nothing wrong with the forum as it is FFS. All people need to do is exercise a bit of common when posting. Why the hell does it have to be down to the forum to protect them from there own stupidity if they post something that could get them into hot water. If I were to post something that later came back and bit me, would I blame the forum for "making me post" or would it be my fault for not thinking before I typed.

For a moment there I thought we were talking bout an Internet forum :? ?

The whole private forum things a little OTT IMHO.

I've made a few things public on here before ,and with all respect to the lad with the lambo if similar happened to me Id be slaughtered if it made the press , no doubt.

I've learned to keep my mouth shut more often now around here and in life in general over the last few years . Any posts I've made which dont adhere to the "SE" charter have been clearly pointed out to me and through the drivel and moaning I've eventully got the point.

As long as the forum in general is seen to "frown" apon any boy racer types then I dont see the problem , believe me this shouldnt be hard for SE. :thumbsup

Mods should do what there title says and moderate any posts which do not suit or would seem to give any outsiders the wrong idea of the forum , and if required delete unreasonable posts.

Be careful what you post and be prepared to face the consiquences of your posts.

As for the whole bebo/facebook thing , I used to rip into folk for using these sites , now it seems I'm the only person who doesnt use them  I find them rather sad but FFS if you need to use them dont sell your whole life to t'internet!!

The one thing I was thinking of is if it would be possible for all threads to automatically expire and drop off after say 8 weeks of inactivity? We could probably live without having to trawl historical posts, I know I could. The only exception to this would be the Technical section. May not be practical or worthwhile, but just a thought.

Thats a great Idea , could give me a fresh start

Seriously though that is a good idea is this possible ?

I really respect Paul (ruadh) and I recognise where he's coming from.

However, I think I fall into the narrow majority who feel "it's the internet, stupid" and as such you should be self-moderating. To try to bring greater levels of security or privacy to the forum simply increases admin overhead and although I'm a moderator and happy to take my share, I get precious little enough time to enjoy reading and posting here as it is, to want to spend any further proportion of it monitoring and finding polite ways to tell people to feck off ;-)

We are nearly 10 years into the SE online community and several years into the forum version. The former yahoo version was relatively open as well - albeit you did have to sign up, which required admin approval, but unless you had a pretty dodgy name or didn't reply to an ad-hoc challenge email, you got in, and all our history was laid bare. So far, we have shown a pretty good batting average on member behaviour, lack of "leaks" to the press, steady but sensible growth in membership etc...and also a good blend of accessibility to prospective members for browsing a la "shop window" but also with a useful "members only" section much like the Members' Lounge at some of the more pukka golf clubs.

There are also PM mechanisms for very private chats, and for everything else there's the electric telephone ;-)

As Barry White and Billy Joel both said..."Don't go changing...to try to please me...I love you just the way you are"

I have been in a similar situation with abuse of what is posted online.. A few work colleques who would turn what was said on this forum into a big joke to be discussed in the tea shack as an example of how sad I am.. all that happened in the long run is more and more poeple say to me what these idiots are saying and how fcuk sad they are and how they dont understand the mentality of them. I just made the decision not to let the idiots at work bother me anymore

Whatever you say on here you must be prepared to say to anyones face and to have it heard by anyone. And those of you who know me will know I aint afraid to say things that are uncomfortable and controvesial when I feel it is justified. A few of you have felt the rough side of my opinion, we are allowed to dissagree once in a while, it doesnt make me or you a bad person.

What has happened with the press is unexcusable, probably taken out of context, I dont know, I didnt know him and havnt been reading the papers so can only comment on what has been posted on here.

As far as making the forum more secure or more private there is possible some scope for admistrative cleansing of some of the registered members who havnt posted even once.. Half of them are probably nigerian con men and the rest Chavtastic wannabees.. I have asked in the past if something could be done but I know think the level of access and control we have is as good a compromise as we can get.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Whilst I am sure that it would be possible to trawl the members database and eliminate any non-posting members, I'm not sure what purpose it would serve. I don't have access to the database so I cannot comment on how hard it would actually be.

I think Paul raised a subtle point - it's not just about leaching journos and self-incriminating tales of crazy driving antics - it's also just about a desire to have a private chat with pals - to talk about things that robbers might cherish or even just to have everything you say raked over by people who are out to cause trouble (as in Vic's case).

I think these are both real world problems.

Unfortunately, as I said earlier in this thread, I don't believe it's possible to provide any real privacy and all I can recommend is that people treat the forum as 100% public.

Cheers,
Robin

Very true - I do a lot of work for Scotland's biggest selling newspaper and have never hidden that fact
as some of you may remember.

I'm sure there could be traffic police who are members, as well as other occupations regarded as 'undesirable' by some!

Don't post here very often but I'm passionate about Lotus and the cars they build - on my 3rd Elise.

Was on SE1 and would like to stay a member of SE2 so I would vote to keep the status quo .

Guys,

I've not got round to posting a poll - can we take this thread as an indicator of the general feeling? I don't think a poll would tell us anything that this thread hasn't - fair?
