Not good
I'm considering buying one of the ex-hire bikes from Glentress, £399 for a Kona Caldera with hydraulic disc brakes (to replace a 5 year old EB Cuillin 3 HT funnily enough).

Its worth keeping a look out at the local cash convertors or on their online site incase some one trades it in, if you dont have it datataged, chipped or postcoded some git might try flogging it there
I've seen some absolutly cracking bikes at the one in Edinburgh for washers compared to their new price ~ Full carbon fiber Trek road bike 06 £569 a few months back it would have been in the region of £2k+ new
would have been tempted myself if I didnt already have 6 bikes in the flat + the wife's and kids ones

Sympathy mate! I'd be gutted if my MTB was stollen.
Coincidentally, a mate of mine recently asked for my advice on buying a bike for £200-£300 and after a bit of research, this caught my eye:
http://www.feltbicycles.com/mtb-spec.php?id=4
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fel ... e-ec000555
Not a brand I was familiar with in MTB terms, but they've been making road bikes for ages and are now making a name for themselves on the MTB scene.
Or how about this if you can stretch your budget:

Thats a lot of bike for the money!

Sorry Martin...... I hope you find a nice replacement.

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

Sorry to hear that mate....
I have many contacts that cen help you with a new one or a used one.....
Does your company do the cycle to work scheme? (no jokes, I know where you work, but you get a cheap bike out of it!)
Morvern may also have some contacts in the bike world!

Re: Stolen MTB - no more cycling for me ! (FALC)
Yes work does a bike to work scheme that i'm going to ask about on monday...............my commute is 42 miles each way though so I'll maybe not do it every day
Bike was a matt black Edin Bike Co-Op Cullin Disc from 2007 - which i'd imagine is pretty rare on this side of scotland - wasn't coded unfortunately
Morven has already been on the case helping me to look out a suitable replacement

1st choice - ride to work!
2nd choice - custom build (offers at change of season)
My commuter is an ex hire bike (top spec trek) from up near aberfoyle.....fully serviced prior to me getting it......I've only changed tyres and brake pads......it does around 4000-5000 miles per year......for the last 5 years....not bad for £180

Re: Stolen MTB - no more cycling for me ! (FALC)
Well the ride to work scheme would mean i'd have to wait til December until i got my bike so I'm not so keen on that. It would also require some "creative" accounting to justify so maybe no big loss.
I'm awaiting a call from the wheelies mob to see what they can offer me (they are being paid directly from the insurance co) so get poised to offer advice

Re: Stolen MTB - no more cycling for me ! (FALC)
Sorry to hear that Matrin. Absolute scumbags
A mate from work had his MTB stolen from the stair of his 5th floor flat in Edinburgh last year. It was a pretty tasty bike (about £3k worth IIRC) and they must have followed him home as there is no way it could have been an opportunistic thief passing on the top floor of a secure entry block.
Just to sort of hijack your thread, I am also looking for a bike with a £300 max. Was thinking about this spcialized hard rock sport.
Anyone got an opinion?

Re: Stolen MTB - no more cycling for me ! (FALC)
Bad news, hope you get a new one sorted out as quickly as possible and find somewhere a tad more secure for it, as you say, atleast try to lock it to something, my new MTB is living in the spare room until the garage conversion is finished. Hopefully you've got some help with advice for a replacement, to me the only disadvantage of the cheaper MTBs is that they normally come with the Suntor forks which are not too special and they tend to have V brakes or cable operated discs, however get a good frame and you can upgrade as you wear parts out. If Morven is advising you, just point out that you'd like a bike that can be ridden up hill as well as down
