Weekend in Wales and Belfast

Post by Rag_It » Mon Apr 03, 2006 3:26 pm

Other half is working in Cardiff for 6 weeks in a Penthouse in Cardiff bay, going down at the end of the month - looking for suggestions where to go in Wales if there is anywhere worth going?!!Got a car for the weekend!

Also Stag in Belfast (god knows why it wasn't Dublin!) middle of May, so as no one has any ideas other than Pubs, anyone got any suggestions as what to do in Belfast. Staying in the city centre with no transport!

Cheers,

Dave

P.S Check out how interesting my Easter Holiday is... Wales!

Dave

Had one night out in Belfast, it was a great night, even better as it was a customer who paid, (doesn't usually happen but they wanted to thanks us for some work we did), can't really remember too many places, but around Queens university was where we spent most of the night, sorry not much help really.

Wales I know pretty well, my advice is take your car with you, there are some really good roads, can be a bit more busy than Scottish roads, but there are alot of B roads close to the mainroads that are usually quite quiet.
The area along the river Wye from Chepstow to Monmouth is good, as I mentioned stay on the B roads the A466 is a great but very few places to overtake, and caravans like it. The B road drive from Chepsow to Abergavenny via Usk is a lot of fun. Head a bit further north to Brecon, Builth Wells, Rhayader, Newtown, and then head south down the border, Clun, Knighton, Hay on Wye, have a look at map, you'll see what I mean.

Cardiff bay is great aswell, my cousin got married in the St David's Hotel there, top spot. Best to avoid Newport, unless your idea of a fun night out is too much drinking on an empty head, a wee fight and a trip to A+E.

Have fun

Giles

I'd actually (from reputation) take a night in Belfast over Dublin any day of the week. Dublin's supposedly been ruined by stag dos and rediculous pricing.....

I agree Shug, after 10 years in Dublin I never could work out why so many stags and hens go there, a little known fact that Dublin actual has a very small number of pubs for the population, virtually no new pub licences have been granted for years, hence the few very big pubs that charge a fortune.

Some German cities are really the best bet for Stags now, but fortunately most people don't realise this.

Thanks Giles,

I could have driven down myself, however the Derv does enough miles and am going to sell it before it hits 30k in the next couple of months.
So hire car it is, so B roads will not be the order of the weekend, merely interesting places to go and see, of which you have mentioned some nice areas. £50 return on easy jet to bristol and then 20 min drive to cardiff shouldnt be too bad.

Shug, this is the main reason i queried Belfast, because Dublin is always the place everyone goes, so was wondering why we are going to Belfast!!!! I guess only time will tell. The Stags friend simply replied, does it matter where we go, it was relatively inexpensive, and we are going to get panelled! I figure we could do that in a dodgy village in Fife, and still get in the same amount of sh%t!!!!

You should have a good time, the English side of the Wye Valley, into the forest of dean is also very nice, B roads are more fun in any car, and you are not allowed to take a rent a car back unless it has been completely thrashed

Having 'ahem' worked in Belfast for 2 years... (Shhh...! Obviously a bit dodgy....) but the Coyote Ugly Bar in the Odessy center was a good start  Also there is a huge amount of scantily clad blart going to the clubs and bars in there. Not much trouble either. Just watch out for the teeny boppers and you'll be fine!

Town center is ok, very similar to Dundee in size. Don't go sightseeing down the falls road, especially the infamous black taxi tours. Sounds like a good laugh, but no guessing who runs the taxis.... Rugby at Ravenshill ground to the south of the city is an experience to say the least. Port Rush, Giants Causeway and White Rock on the north coast all have miles of golden sand and no one on it, good for a BBQ and seal watching.

Sleazy Jet fly into Belfast international regually (Where I used to work) but belfast city is closer to the center.

Best meals I've had are out of town a bit, "the Back Shed" in Antrim for quality home made Italian (If you can find it!) The Curry House or the Thai on the A6 out of Templepatrick and for a morning after cure we used to go to "The Plough" in Hillsbrough, south of Lisburn (Not Lisbon, thats in Portugal ) for the best pub meals I have ever had. (Venison and Ale pie.... hmmm....)

Easy to get around, it's only 100miles across, and the border areas are dodgy to say the least. But don't bother with the trains, the neds tie concrete fenceposts to the rails for kicks.

Thinking about it most of my experience of Northern Ireland was though a drunken haze. I had a great time!

Wow.....! What a legendery vehicle! Every YTS lads dream to be let out in the works van, how cool was that!

A mate of mine had a similar van when he was a postie, saw pictures of him standing on the roof when he drove thru a 3' deep flood. There were parcels floating around in the back! (It's ok he works in air traffic control now.....)

I used to get sent out in the works S2 Landy in bruise purple, saw it recently (9 years later!) still looks as shabby as ever, but still going. I remember hosing the mud off before getting back.....
