FALC Wireless networking....

Post by Rich H » Mon Nov 26, 2007 10:10 pm

Evening all,

Question for the computer bods:

I have just setup my shiney new O2 wireless router, sadly my pc is not wireless but my laptop has a card that is. Can I set them both up on the internet?

the Desktop is on through an ethernet cable (Didn't know it had one until the wireless box wanted one) and runs ok a bit quicker than the last one and half the price (£7.50pm)

The wireless card detects the router but I don't know how to connect, anyone got any ideas? The O2 CD just complains about the laptop being Windows 2k and quits

Does the PC get out to the internet?
I.e. you have setup the internet user name and password, and saved them to the router? you open up internet explorer and you on the internet

Laptop? xp 98 vista
PCMCIA card, centrino, built in wifi?

PC connects to the internet no problem, curiously it didn't ask for any information like logins and passwords... Using it now as it happens...

PC is XP
Laptop is win 2k
Its a PCMCIA card thingy.

Did the card come with its own software? and is it loaded? not used 2000 for a while but should be the same setup as xp.

There should be an icon down in the task bar near the time. double click on this and you should get a window to configure the connection. The laptop can pick up a signal, but you need to give it permission to allow it to connect through the router.

The configuration will depend on what, if any, security setting you put in when you set the router up. i.e WPA WEP etc it's best to switch all these off until you can get a connection, and once established, set them up after.

Rich

Not quite sure how helpful I can be as I am running Apple Macs.

I connect to a Orange (Wannado) Livebox which has both ethernet and wifi connections. I connected a USB Wifi adaptor to an upstairs Mac and went into Netwrok configuration and it saw my Livebox connection amongst the other local netwroks available. I then click on the my Livebox connection and in a dialogue box I had to provide my Live Box WEP Number. I did have to put the Livebox into PAIRING mode for the initial setup. Might be worth checking in your setup if you have to switch on some pairing switch.

I was able to find this WEP Code by entering a url on a Mac connected to the Livebox by ethernet cable, which brought up the configuation settings of my local livebox. The configuration settings included the WEP number which I copied and then entered in the other computer with the WiFi USB adaptor. It took a bit of messing about but did get it to connect and saved the configuration on the Livebox. It now connects without any problem and no need to enter the WEp number again.

Cheers gents its working now!

I decided that I didn't know enough about W2k so I've upgraded to XP on the laptop. The O2 install disk ran fine and set everything up. Turns out it was the WEP code that I needed, its secured by default and I needed the code.

Thanks again!

I'm hoping I can sit in the Porsche staring at the laptop and Megatune while on the 'net so I can download all the bits I have forgotton instead of running in and out to the desktop!

Its FQ too, about 50% faster than ornage managed (3meg vs 2meg) at less than half the price! (£7.50 vs £17.99) Tech support is a free phone number too!
