Mobile Speed Camera

Post by 111Robin » Sat Nov 17, 2007 7:57 pm

I went past a mobile unit on the A90 today at somewhere between 75-79, definitely under 80. Anyone know if this is going to incurr a penalty ?. This speed is fine for going past the fixed cameras, are the mobile units different, ie. anyhting above the limit is a fine ?

My 111r speedo is not in sync with my tom tom sat nav tracked speed. The in car speedo always reports a higher value, I think 80mph = 73ish mph on the tom tom.

Not sure which is correct,

yup, My sat nav shows about 6-7mph below what speed shows, i think you'll be ok. Your 80 would have been about 72-73

My old S2 speedo always exactly matched any GPS unit I used with it. Odd that newer Elises/Exiges don't' seem to be as accurate.

Every other vehicle I have owned (Car & Bikes) have all read between 5% to 10% over.
Vauxhall Astra 1.4 Sports Hatch - not as slow as my old Corsa :-)

I was in the Golf but I guess the accuracy will be similar. I'll just keep my fingers crossed, I've only just got rid of 3 points from my licence, don't want any more so soon.

Car speedo should always be accurate or up to 10% over read.

My cousin got pulled by traffic for doing 85 when 3 up, he and both passengers argued he was doing 70. Police then drove his car up to 85 following the patrol car - indicated 70 on speedo !! He got off with speeding ticket and had to get speedo in car replaced and have it inspected at MOT test centre.
He had had the car from new for a year and a half before this incident and had never got a ticket despite obviously always going much faster than he thought.

Hmm, sorry to put a damper on this but I'd be concerned, in theory they can do you for 71, on A roads even dual carriageways they only let you off upto 75mph whereas it tends to be 80 on motorways. If you don't hear anything after a couple weeks you can probably relax, best of luck.

I don't see how they can penalise you for driving at a speed that doesn't trip the fixed cameras. I always set the cruise control at an indicated 77/78 as I know this is safe for the fixed cameras. How can they then claim a lower limit using another camera ?. Surely that's some form of deception ?.

If the cameras don't flash then I can't be breaking the law can I. My speedo is obviously not 100% accurate, officer.

That's because yours had a Stack unit but the later cars have a Shurlock one that isn't as accurate

I reckon my golf (2006 Mk V) is over reading by approx 5-7% on the speedo.
