I don't want to ditch it, for the reasons Pete has mentioned. the car has generally been very reliable considering it's practically hand built, but the issues I have had meant the car was off the roads for weeks at a time.

Main reason for that is because they closed the Glasgow branch practically at the same time I bought the car. I can't just jump on a bus to MMC in Edinburgh, and this has been the single biggest frustration about owning the Elise. A knackered relay and a coolant leak aren't the end of the world, but when the service center is at the opposite end of the country and they often can't give you a courtesy car for a few weeks this really hacks me off.

When my mate puts his Boxster in for a service they give him a 911 straight away. And he pays about the same for a service, so it's not like he's being fleeced for the courtesy car. This again is a major weakness.

I've spoken to Graeme about this, and the problem with a service center in Glasgow and Aberdeen (their two proposed sites) is with Lotus wanting it to be a dedicated building with dedicated staff. They are working on it, but of course it isn't helping me.

If I had a service center I could drop the car off at, and could get a decent courtesy car at short notice, then my main reason for hating the car would go away. Minor problems quickly turn into big ones when they aren't fixed first time, and when they leave you at a major inconvenience either to pick the car up again or to do without a car while it's in.

Phraze, don't be misled that the car is particularly unreliable - it isn't. I've had just as much bother with other cars, my last one was a Honda S2000 with supposed award winning reliability. The difference was that the dealer was on my doorstep and they always gave me a courtesy car, even if it was just a Jazz or a Civic.

If I can get a decent price for an extended Lotus warranty, I will keep the car until spring and re-evaluate. If they have a service center in Glasgow, or can at least guarantee me a decent courtesy car if it goes wrong I will probably buy an Elise SC. If not, I'll either take my money to Mr Porsche (meaning mega expense cos all I'd want would be a Carrera S and I'd also need to part with my savings to do, which I loathe) or give up all together.

Thanks for the advice and comments. I also need to get out with you lot more. I haven't done so to date because the first meet I went to there was tons of you and I could only remember about 2 names, so felt embarrassed! :D

I know its only a minor issue compared with all the other sh*t but when my car was at MMC, I got the Queen St to Haymarket (Waverley) train and then went back one stop to the Edinburgh Park train station. it was fairly easy!

however, i suspect it was the time it takes rather than the PITA of getting the Public transport!

Chin up Gaz, It will get sorted.

Pete's summary was spot on! I love the suggestion of 2x S1s to replace an S2 8)

Alternativly, get an S1 + a Mk 5 golf Gti. You know that makes sense  ... I'm working on that plan... just need the S1 part of it now

Spot on. I'd need to change stations in Glasgow to get from Ayr to Edinburgh, as well as trains.

They still have the car. It's not obvious why it's overheated twice now. Anyone had this before?

I'm with the guys that suggest a S1 + a reliable second car for when the Lotus is in bits. For new S2 money, you can get a good S1 and a cracking other (or lots of spare beer tokens)

I don't know how mechanically minded you are or if you're willing to learn but there's something satisfying (and at times frustrating) about working out a fault and fixing it yourself and the more you do, the better it gets and then you swap knowledge with like minded people on here.

Not much help to you while your car's in the garage but just my opinion.

Anyway - I hope that it all turns out ok (whatever you decide) and that you stick with a Lotus of some description :thumbsup

I dont know the story of the Glesga Lotus place but when we bought ours we were told that there would be a place in Aberdeen within 6 months .... that was just shy of 3 years ago.

the thing with owning a Lotus is you have to try and accept it going to break sometimes. We were lucky, in the year we had ours we only had a duff battery (MMC replaced), sticky locks (fixed myself) and a leaky boot which MMC fixed at a service.

I would say that owning a Lotus is more of a hobby than anything else

The 111R was the signal for me that an Elise was an everyday prospect, and if you live near the dealer it probably still is. But with one single dealer for an entire country it is ripping the piss.

Even when something minor goes wrong for me it's a 150 mile trip to get it sorted. I won't be buying a supercharged Elise now, and will probably buy something soulless like a Porsche or more likely a BMW Z4M.

I'm with eoinmac - buy a 7 !!!!

Drive it hood down every day - even when raining

So simple any idiot can fix 'em - little or no depreciation if you buy right.

Buy a shed for transport (10 year old Toyota or Golf for about £700)
