In Car Sounds

Post by Jamie84 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 11:01 pm

so i bought a new alpine head unit , sounds great with engine off....when i start to drive its drowned out by the stage 2 , its seriously lacking bass!

My plans are to upgrade all speakers and possibly fit a sub in the footwell ( i have seen pics of this somewere maybe seloc )

Has anyone on here done any installs??

If so, details would be useful ,speakers etc.I aint really too clued up in car audio.

I listen to alot of music in car so would be good to hear some quality audio.

I stay in barrhead were soundmaster scotland is located , apparently the guys there are pretty good, but it would be good to know what i am after when i go see them.

Thanks guys

I'm sure Meenrod had a sub fitted behind his seats.

Which Alpine unit did you go for?

Didn't realise you were in Barrhead . . . was up there in the Exige on Monday night. Will keep my eyes open for you! I'm in Elderslie, but up in Barrhead now and again.

i like the sound of the behind the seats thing , perhaps two !

Not sure exact model i will check tomorow..Cost 200 quid , has ipod interface , CD Radio.

I told the guy i wasnt too fussed bout spending a good wad on one a bit more expensive , but he was adement that this one is the best on market for ipod interface.

i upgraded the speakers in mines almost straight away.

i like decent tunes in the car for when not havin a blast.

i put in alpine speakers, i cant remember the exact models but i can check for you if you want.

made a hell of a difference just doin that even with the standard blaupunkt head unit.

was a piece of p**s to do as well, oh apart from the one behind the passenger seat. you have to take the passenger seat out to get at it.

planning an alpine head unit with the ipod as well, prob the same one you have, been quoted about the same price and it is supposed to be really quick at switching songs etc. some with ipod connections are really slow apparantly.

and alpine do an amplified sub which i've seen fitted behind the seats or in the passenger footwell (prob a better position for it). think that costs £99.

i dont see the point spending thousands on a stereo for an elise either but think the above would give good results at a decent budget.

Does anyone know what size / wattage / anything about the standard S1 speakers?

Mine seem to have Alpine on them grille anyway, and don't sound terrible I suppose, but i'd like something a bit nicer. This whole lack of front speaker fitment troubles me lots though :(

Also, i'm looking for ideas on how to fit an iPod into the car (ok, all I can come up with is velcro and the bottom of the dash!)

My car has an eyebrow-raising* Kenwood stereo in it which I tried to remove last weekend with no avail. How the heck do I get it out of there? Can I remove the heater control panel to get behind it?

*eyebrow-raising in that the volume numbers on the LCD are backwards. Normal traffic volume level: -46
Turn it up for motorways level: -28
It also seems to count down from album total time rather than up per track
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
'18 Mazda Mx5 - The wife's, so naturally my daily
'19 Ducati Monster 797 - Baby bike bike

I have pretty much given up listening to music in the Exige. It has to be so loud to compete with the Larini I fear for the state of my hearing  . And the Larini isn't as loud as a stage 2.....Wish someone would come up with a valved sports exhaust which was quiet for cruising and listening to music, but loud when you are just out for a blat.

I'm sure someone has, I seen one somewhere and it had removable baffles on the end that could change the volume, it was todo with noise restrictions at some tracks.

I am thinking more like the valve arrangement in the Aston Vantage and Ferrari 430 - both these have valve in the exhaust controlled by the ECU which opens at higher revs to enable them to pass EU drive by noise restrictions for production cars, but still sound loud at full chat. COme to think of it the S2 111s standard exhaust has something similar so it is definitely possible. Seems an obvious solution and I am sure lots of people would want a sports exhaust like this. I love my Larini when I am out for a blat, but on long journeys it would be nice to have it a bit quieter.
