Andy

I have has some interesting moments with tile lifters as well - part of the job as a telecomms engineer I think. We used to have some with spikes on for the really heavy tiles on the mainframe machine room floor which had a four foot raised floor and therefore seriously heavy tiles. You needed two tile lifters for each tile.

Raised floors were great for cable-tying apprentices to cable tray underneath them and going for lunch.

LMAO...

Sanjoy, you have PM.... and if you know this person you will probably find it even funnier. The metal tile conducted the electricity from the power cable, straight up the coax cable and frazzled the backplane on the switch.... In fact, not only did it take Livi out, but also 120 agents in India... plus many of the calls for Dunfermline were routed via Livi...

Thats a special memory... that I'll take with me. When I turned up at the Comms Room there were about 30 people in there (90% managers) and a stench of soiled undergarments.

Fair play to the Telecoms Manager there... under severe pressure from above he would not reveal the name of the person (there was a witch hunt). Would have looked silly as it was the same manager who hired him eventually... lol.

Sanjoy, the only major disadvantage of these suckers is the fact that you can't see if they're loosing suction.
Manfretto do these, but they have a suction indicator. Once the red ring is visible, it's time to either pump the sucker or to stop and remove the construction.

Also... when the dreaded rear screen stone pops up, the camera will be on the road/track instantly :o

Another important issue is the weight of the camera itself.

I've looked at buying 'serious' kit like the ones with three or five suction mounts and lot's of sticks to be able to create distance from the car. I didn't buy the kit as nobody was able to tell me / guarantee that it wouldn't fall of the car with my camera and lenses attached.

I might be buying something like an old EOS350 or something else light to use with a kit like that. I wouldn't want to risk my day to day kit..

I see your point Yvu but to be honest none of the "low end" kit I have doung online provides the suck indicators. It would be nice.

I do get your very good observation about the rear window popping.

Had a play with the tile lifters today at work and the handles are hollow so options of utilising that to creat a mount or simply some form of jubilee clip to hold the foot of the tripod to the bar of hte suction mount.

The Tripod is only 1060mm tall and of very light construction and the video camera I bought is also very light and bought for its erm ability to bounce without causing tears. But for other trakc users it will defo be tethered.

Its just another little something extra to keep me interested in hacking the car on the round track when I can so that I have some editing to do in the winter months!

What about removing the rear screen and clamping some sort of construction onto the harness bar?

(two clamps on the harness bar, Y shape up to some sort of joint, with an extra leg backwards through the rear window and a suction clamp attached for stability.)
