Highly unlikely that it would be cash in hand unless it was a really small farm - too difficult to get away with on any kind of large scale. Farmers are probably more wrapped up in red tape than any other industry in the UK.

£120 per week may be right as there is a chance that the farmer (gangmaster) takes a share of their wage as board, but I would imagine it would be much higher.

Most farmers I know look after there foreign students. I am sure that as they are EU citizens that the minimum wage applies. Labour for these kinds of jobs is very scarce and the students now seem to have the pick of the jobs (no pun intended :D ).

being a foreigner in UK (well at home within the SE bunch :D ) the rule is u cannot work in UK without a work permit. and if u r a student, u fall under the minimum wages category. all those people who work here without work permit get paid lesser than minimum wages, but they get cash in hand. take a job as a pizza delivery boy and u'll know exactly what i'm talking about. £5/hr + £0.70/delivery. in 1 evening (5 hours) u would earn about £40 (including tips)

Immigrant workers contribute far more in tax, can't remember the figures, than is paid out to immigrants in benefits.

They are here because we need them to fill all levels of employment from doctors thru' to pizza delivery boys. They are not work shy and can hopefully be encouraged to take up permanent residence in the UK.

The only unfortunate thing is that so many want to send a proportion of their income back 'home' therefore not spending their readies here. If we all spent our money overseas or shipped it offshore the economy slowly drains.

As with immigrants from the past they fill posts less desirable, at levels of income so many would not accept, thus keeping costs lower and or increasing profits.

Immigrants do alot of the jobs that the "yoof of today" feel they are to good to do, I have seen it more and more in young apprentices they all expect to make lots of money for plasma TV's and flash cars but they don't expect to have to work for it. and alot of them are thick. but you have to set standards with imigration no dafties or ugo's ;)
