Scottish Elises

Guys, thinking about entering a few sprints/hillclimbs this year for fun in the DC2 but to be honest not really sure where to start

I have been on http://www.scottish-sprinting.co.uk and see i need a Non Race National B from MSA, £36? Timing Strut, where would be the cheapest place to buy one? Cost? Flame resistant overalls, again best lace to buy them, approx cost? And a crash helmet to meet 2010 standards, http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/vie ... 19&t=24134 Again approx cost? Also read for this year that you need to wear gloves, that right? What about boots/shoes?

Next, Class/car??

Would i be in Class A2 "Modified Saloon Cars (Road Tyres) over 1400cc and up to 1800cc" or "A9 Road-going Production Two-Wheel-Drive Saloons up to 1800cc" as the car is standard

Not got the time or budget to enter the whole series so it would be for fun only, what events could i enter? Whats the difference between the events highlighted in pink and blue on the Sprinting site above? What day are the events normally on, Saturday or Sunday?

Hi Mike, I've just got my licence through today.

I'm going to be using the Elise in the Lowlands Championshiop.

Yes, you need a non Race National B - £37 - you can apply online as long as you have a passport style photo on your pc. I applied for mine on Tuesday evening and it arrived this morning.

I got Sparco Gloves & boots last year for Christmas, which are FIA approved.

I need to get a new helmet, as my 3 year old OMP BS Type A is no longer suitable!

Timing strut, I've asked Stu Pollock to make one for the Elise that bolts onto the tow hook mounting.

For what I've gleaned from flatchat, A2 this year will be for standard production cars, so you'd fit in there, not sure if A9 will still exist?

Mike, it was indeed fun at the LOT day, best track day I've ever done, but got bored at the AMP3 day a month or two later, so decided to go and do something competitive this year!

I don't think you need to register for a championship, but from what I've read, you automatically get sent entry forms for all the rounds (and more chance of getting an entry for the busy ones) if you enter eitehr the Scottish Hillclimb, Sprint, speed or Lowlands Speed championships.

The Lowland has 11 rounds: @ Kames (a few times), Doune (twice), Ingliston, Forrestburn (twice I think) and think it will only be a tenner to enter. Max score is from 8 rounds.

All sounds like good fun, just got to get the car MOT'd and get a helmet and I'll be good to go!

If you are a member of the club (and you need to be a member of at least one MSA registered club) that runs the championship then you are normally entered automatically. If your not a member then you will need to register. This is done by paying a few quid (£10-20) or joining that club, and then you will receive event notification etc for that championship. Most clubs run some sort of championship be it just local rounds of the Scottish sprint and hillclimb events.
You can easily make a strut for your own car out of 3mm aluminium just cut it to shape and size as laid out in the blue book (which you'll get with your license) and bend it in a vice to suit. Helmet, race suit and this year gloves and away you go

Cheers Mike, my nearest club seems to be East Ayrshire, thinking about it, pretty sure i am a member as i signed up for a day at Kames a while ago. Or does the membership only last a year?

How do you hear about test days? Do you need all the clubber for them?

Yeah, the membership lasts for a calendar year, like the MSA licence. I'm going to send off my form to EACC soon!

EACC is a good club to join. They run a test day/night at least every month so you quickly get to know Kames. There's also some wise old guys who built the track who can show you the 'lines' too. For the test days, you need your helmet and that's about it.

The class structure is changing in 2010. Your car will probably be in A2 depending on the level of modification. Looks like List 1B tyres will still be allowed so if you don't already have them, get a set of V700s, R888s, R1-Rs or A048R. Note that the programme and regulations have not yet been sanctioned by the MSA and therefore have not yet ben published.

As for what events you should do - that depends on your budget and preferences. I personally prefer sprints because I'm a big fat woose and have too much imagination But Doune and Forrestburn are definitely for REAL men! I fully intend to break my Doune cherry this year. I also intend to be at Ingliston which ain't going to be a round of the Scottish championship. You might also want to consider a sortie down south - last year I did Harewood, Three Sisters, Barbon, Olivers Mount and Curborough. In that case, join a north of England club like Wigton MC or Longton and District MC.

The Lowland championship would be a good bet - you might even pick up a trophy at the end of the season! I've won Class A8 two years running despite coming last in every event - how does that work
