I had a massive rant about some car hire company (honestly can't remember their name now) on SelCock who had intentionally misled and then left me fek all time to sort out an alternative (I still managed to tho heh!!).
Did the hire company contact me about the thread... no, did they fek! Straight to the site admins saying this is libellous, u are responsible, we are a big company etc etc. Censorship thro intimidation! Libel is incredibly expensive to prove in court (think Elton John kinda rich) and I'm fairly sure in the (perceived) climate of terrorists postin about how to make bombs no judge would even consider a case where someone said Bobs garage is full of cnut!

It's worth pointing out that we are still using a freebie forum. This means that we are subject to the hosting company's terms and one of them is that forums should contain and adult material. It's obviously aimed at porn but if someone there decided we were breaking the terms, we'd lose the forum.

There's no way it's gonna turn into SELC*CK though, because we're not a big enough collection of wankers.

I'm not trying to be totalitarian or some sort of power freak - if it was just us then there would be no problem in my head about whacking an 18 cert on the forum (or at least a chunk of it) and letting everyone get on with it. But as Simon says, we're not independantly hosted (so have to abide by the host's rules) and remember folks, most of our forums can be read by guests.

Here's a question I've been meanin to ask an might as well throw in here... just wondering who gets the advertising revenue? For the most part its not too generic and pretty well directed at us, Adrian Flux for e.g.

I know, I know, but we're in someone elses house, so we'll abide by their rules. If you really, really want to vent, we might set up an 18+ forum when we move server, but I think we should be able to control ourselves in public....

Things like ranting about companies won't attract any comment from anyone here (unlike SELC*CK, who seem to think they are a multinational corporation) - what you post is your responsibility in that case and if necessary, one of the mods will post after you clarifying that this is not necessarily the opinion of the group, yadda yadda....

It's easy to get yourself in a mountain of sh*t on the internet, so arses have to be covered.

Ad revenue goes to Freeyabb - who do the hosting (free) for the forum.
