Hello all,

I'm upgrading the board to phpBB 3 at about 6pm tomorrow. It will take about an hour so SE2 will be off while that happens. All posts, avatars and PMs will be migrated across.

what does that mean? new functions? emoticons? less bots?

It looks a bit different, there's no other downloadable styles yet for phpBB 3 but I'm sure those will follow later. The emoticons are the same as the current board - these can be added to though in the same way that they can on the current board.

It should sort the bot problem Captcha (the squiggly text you have to read to prove you're a human) works in phpbb3. It was present in phpbb2 but didn't work for us, perhaps because of the amount of rubbish in the database leftover from when the forum was hosted in freeyabb. The upgrade cleans out all this stuff. Captcha is used on new registrations and also if you login to your account incorrectly 3 times, in case you're a bot trying to guess a password.

There are lots of other new features in phpbb 3 too. Some of them might not be turned on initially. Some of them might not ever be turned on

You can subscribe to topics to be emailed when there's an update.
You can have file attachments to posts.
You can have post icons.
You can have font colours.
User profiles can show most active forum/thread.
You can send PMs to multiple users.
You can bookmark threads.
You can save draft posts.
You can add other users as friends (to see their current status)
You can add other users as foes (to ignore their posts/PMs)

There's also a bunch of additional admin tools like global posts, limiting how long users have to edit posts, auto delete PMs that kind of thing.
