Anyone know what happens to your no claims discount if you don't own a car for an extended period of time?
I assume you loose it eventually but do you get some breathing space? Couple of months or something? Or is more like weeks before you lose your NCD?

When you leave your insurer can issue a no claims cert can they not ?

Yeah you can ask your insurer for proof of your no claims, but I think if you don't take out new insurance within a certain period it gets lost.

The NCD is good for two years and after that you have to start again.
If you drive a company car then, if you get a letter stating all clean from your empolyer the insurance company will grant you a NCD appropriate to the period of company car use. I dont think you can run them both together though.
I have the company audi and G was insuring the elise but with the impendig wee one we are moving to 3 cars which brought my insurance back into play. I have insured the elise as i will most likely be driving it and G is insuring my old 306 which has beeen on loan.
I was lucky as I was 1 year and 11 months down the line but managed to scrape in under the line and recove my full NCD.
If you contact you last insurer they will provide you with a letter proving your NCD when you were last insured.

Sounds about right, I lost mine when I was abroad for a few years, which was a bit of a shock! But not as much of a shock as my credit rating dropping to zero! (no change there then hehe)

Mine was definatly valid for up to 2 years, beyond that you lose it. I was just inside with a week to go, made my wallet twitch I can tell you....
