2nd car insurance options

Post by StiflerMR2 » Sat Jun 09, 2012 5:02 pm

Hey all,

I currently have one car which is insured with esure (they were the cheapest!) I'm wanting to buy a second car which would also be in my name. What are my options here regarding insurance policies and what is the cheapest way to insure both cars in my name?

* Is it possible to start a new insurance policy with a new company and mirror my NCB from the other policy? (i'm guessing not).
* Is it simpler to just cancel my current policy and switch to someone like admiral who will do multi-car?

I'm not very clued up on insurance so just wondering if anyone has any tips?

TIA :) :thumbsup

Multi car policies from Admiral or Aviva might help. I *think* they were able to apply my NCB from Elise to the MINI as well. All a bit of a blur mind you!!

You guess correctly. The only instance of this I've seen was specialist motorhome insurance, who happily mirrored our car policy NCB onto the camper even though it was a different underwriter.

Probably cheapest short term, depending on what the cars are. Better still, hit the comparison sites and start building up another NCB on the new car from scratch. It might be more expensive for a few years, but eventually you'll have 2 lots of NCB that you can move around independently to the cheapest providers separately. If you start down the multicar policy route, you're stuck with it, as I believe they won't give you two lots of NCB if you leave (somebody will correct me if that's wrong).

Hmm, thanks for the insights chaps.

Currently insured car is a Cliosport 197 (Group 15E IIRC), 2nd car would be a 111s (which i'm guessing is Group 20). Cheapest way might just be to sell the wifes banger - transfer the clio to her and keep my NCB and apply them to the Elise.

Problem is she only has 1 years NCB :(

Thanks again :)

Your current insurer will likely mirror your existing NCD for the new car. That might not make it the cheapest tho, but you will get a good idea of ballpark prices from the comparisons sites.

If you do go multi-car there's no need to cancel existing policy. Start with new car and switch existing car when the current policy expires.

Cheers chaps,

I'll phone up and see if they'd mirror, that'd be the perfect solution but am guessing it would be a bit of a long shot.....especially if one car was insured for Dundee and one for Newcastle - would that cause issues do you think?

And for the acid test...how they (Admiral) handle a claim...I should be able to provide a testimonial (or rant!) on such performance within the next few days.

I've got my Elise(s) insured through CCI (competition Car Insurance) and they were happy to mirror my NCB onto the Elise.
This worked out cheapest for me although in reality i think it was some kind if discount factor applied to the premium rather than a true full no claims discount as in my 2nd Elise year my premium was slightly less than 1st year but I have gone from a full 10year mirrored NCB to a independant 1year NCB so my NCB discount would have reduced 'theoretically'.

Thanks Ian, I'll give them a call as well and find out what the story is. Last time I had an elise I insured it through them so would have no issues using them again.

Thanks all!

If you don't plan to do a lot of miles in the Elise (say you can restrict yourself to 6,000-8,000 per year) then well worth calling around the CCI/Richard Egar/Adrian Flux type places and seeing what they can do for the Elise - they often put them on specialist/classic policies.

NCD is mostly a con IMHO

For amusement I put Katie & myself into the Meerkat insuring our bus with perfect driving history (i.e. no claims in last 5 years, no convinctions, licenses held forever, etc. - all true).

I then altered the NCD from 1 year to 3 years to 6 years and finally to 0 years with proof of having been a named driver for one year (most people have at least this when considering a second vehicle).

I chose the cheapest 7 insurers at the 3 year mark and then checked their prices at the other three.

You'll like the results ...

Code: Select all

NCD Years 0+1 1 3 6
Halifax 164 163 162 146
Lloyds TSB 165 164 163 148
KwikFit 154 167 169 147
Budget 172 172 170 153
Insure 174 174 172 151
Sheila's Wheels 176 175 174 147
Esure 176 175 174 175

NCD Discount 0+1 1 3 6
Halifax 0% 1% 1% 11%
Lloyds TSB 0% 1% 1% 10%
KwikFit 0% -8% -10% 5%
Budget 0% 0% 1% 11%
Insure 0% 0% 1% 13%
Sheila's Wheels 0% 1% 1% 16%
Esure 0% 1% 1% 1%
On average there is no useful NCD over the first three years.

Out at six years you get a whopping 10-16% discount, though slightly better discount is available from the slightly more expensive insurers; this reflects the fact that they are buying business at the safe end of the spectrum. You would be better switching policies each year, clearly.

One very notable result - KwikFit have a negative discount during the first three years - you would be better off buying into them claiming to have no NCD each year!

Of course none of these insurers would insure the elise, but it shows that claims of 70% NCD are utter bollocks.

Cheers,
Robin

I think your post should go at the top of the Insurance subforum as a sticky Robin.

And you should be invited to join the Car Insurance Ombudsman panel :-)
