Best cleaner for removing splatted flies?

Post by Scottd » Wed Jul 26, 2006 2:29 am

Only had the car back a few days an it's covered! Didn't mind using an old rough cloth to remove them w the old clam but new one's too shiney for that.

Baby wipes if you're out and about.

Washing at home I use a 'bug and tar remover' not sure which one but it fair takes off the bugs and has a bit of wax content.

They seem to come off the Defendall easier than the paint...

Autogimps Active Fly Remover - comes in a trigger bottle and works really well on paint & glass.

Ding to Baby wipes.

Scott I assume you have got a nice layer of wax on that nice new paint ? Only took 3 for a group buy of Harley Wax, still to post pics of the results but well worth it.

Not tempted with Armourfend ?

I know it might sound obvious, but hot water - bit more shampoo, water very hot but still able to put a hand in (just), and its a doddle.

I do a bit of valeting in my spare time (shameless plug - PM me if you need your car done - mates rates for SE guys) and for bug removal I do this:

power wash (with pressure turned down on paintwork, up on glass)

wash it with car shampoo (using a wash mitt and 2 bucket method) my favoured detergent at the moment is Auto Gype bodywork shampoo conditioner

really soak the flies with detergent

wash off with hose

if they're still there, I use a microfibre cloth with a drop of cleaner wax to lift them off or clay bar them using quik detailer. (if they're on glass, then I clay bar)

If the paint is treated well with polish and a wax layer, the flies should slide off with powerwashing and maybe a light pass over with a wash mitt.

T-cut eh.....

guess there was a certain 'don't-give-a-toss'-ness about cutting that clam... but was there any nasty side-effect? thinking of cutting that armco rash I have on the rear of my clam

Nooo - just cosmetic. Was at walking pace and 3/4 on. The windscreen got cracked as the clam popped off it's bolts and the corner banged the screen. Apart from that, no other damage. Didn't even knock the geo.
